The cow call is a folk song from Valdres. The lyrics beginning with "Vi kommer vel over den myra på role haug ....". It is a typical melody from Valdres, well suited to be played on the Norwegian dulcimer "langeleik", which is typical for the Valdres region.

All melodies are real old Norwegian folk tunes, as mentioned in the title of the work. Grieg was in frequent contact with Norwegian folk musicians and had access to contemporary folk music collections. He saw himself as a musical ambassador for the traditional Norwegian folk musik and culture.

I must correct the lyrics: The beginning of the cow call is "So lokka me over den myra te role haug, te role haug, kom alle dei underle dyra, kom ku, kom kalv, kom kyra........" Source: "Norges Melodier", volume 2 song 105.

I trust you for the lyrics even though I have no idea about them ... Anyway, Grieg is one of the best composers so close to my heart as well as my norwegians friends from Trondheim. I hope they're feeling fine.
A french melomaniac who recommends you Django Reinhardt "Grieg's norwegian dance"...

@trebor74 BTW if you are French: your fellow countryman Erik Satie fooled Edvard Grieg in his "Pieces froids". They contain melodies closely inspired by Grieg, and Saties association with Norway and Norwegian music was typically french: "cold". Like in your modern film Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis. Satie had met Grieg at that time when Grieg was in Paris.

have to say, Grieg is lowkey becoming one of my favorite composers

I like your name. A dad is more than a father. A dad who loves Grieg is pretty wonderful.

Grieg single-handedly made me graduate in Norwegian

The first piece in this movement was played by my Orchestra in high school shortly after my grandmother died of lung cancer. I associate her with the first peace, very sad but I know she's with me when I hear it :)
