I really do love jazz, this version of Caravan is probably my favorite. The baritone sax intro is so epic.
I love how jazz feels like its free, yet it's very regimented. A solo may only have a couple bars to play.
But you have to be on time.

This is the best version of the song I've heard to date! (The ones on Money Jungle and Ella sings are great too), but this one just does something for me. The fact, that it was originally released as a bonus track on a 1999 CD reissue of a jazz album from 1967, and yet so people have managed to stumble upon it is simply unbelievable.

Not my favourite for sure. My (very much) favourites are the original 2:39 version from '37 and the one with Ella, and instead the worst is the Ellington Roach Mingus trio, but I've actually heard just 5 versions.

I saw the Duke and his orchestra in Chicago at the Blue Note and he never took a break but kept on playing the piano for the whole evening even when the band took a break. Great great memories.

Did they play Caravan? did he say he co-authored that with Tizol? No! Nat King Cole who invited Tizol to his show ( version is here on YouTube ) to play it with him Cole sang the lyrics...never said composed by Ellington and Tizol, he said, "...composed by Juan Tizol."

Just found out recently (more accurately my dad simply told me our relative was a “famous jazz musician” and not much else) that my dad’s great uncle was Juan Tizol, making him my great GREAT uncle. And he was the only Puerto Rican member of Duke Ellington’s band! Pretty neato

@Theseus076 Juan Tizol collaborated with Ellington, Irving Mills, writing the lyrics. (The lyrics nobody seems to ever use).

To my knowledge, Tizol wrote the basic melody. Ellington wrote everything else.

But Ellington did not have that feeling, that was brought in by Tizol ...Afrodescendant and white, from Puerto Rico...the black American did not have that kind of feeling except for some from New Orleans...but the drum? never, the American black had been devoid of the drum...

What i love the most about this piece ( and I didnt know this at alll til I was playing a solo by Uli Roth ( Scorpions) called 'The Sails of Charon) and what made me enjoy BOTH pieces alot more, was my dad asking me what I was playing on my guitar and I told him that it was Uli and that he's an amazing player who used to be in Scorpions. My dad laughed and said...Well, he stole alot of those licks from Sir Duke and his band. I grew up listening to alot of Duke and Glen Miller and the likes because of my father and grandfather but I could never imagine one of the best guitar solos of all time was ripped from a great like Duke. So I went and listened to this piece and sure enough. It's IN THERE. Not note for note from the clarinet but there are snippets that are inspired by Duke's band that Uli threw into his own. I love the unique way that good soloing in rock or much more clearly, in METAL, that is being used from Jazz influence. Goes to show ya why my dad KNEW and he had never heard the solo I was playing. Sometimes you have to honor the greats like Duke Ellington. It would be a shame not to. As Stevie Wonder once did as well.

Ellington could have never dreamed writing these tunes. Where was he, Ellington going to get that feeling of "exotica, from? like Jelly Roll Morton called " the Latin Tinge."

During this time, I'm assuming the mid 60s, Tizol, Bigard, Greer, and most likely Cootie were no longer part of the band. The trombone soloist in this recording is actually Lawrence Brown, and the drummer is likely Sam Woodyard.

The most I'd listened to any music even close to Jazz was the amazing soundtrack from Halo 3: ODST, but Whiplash gave me a new respect for the genre and I'm glad it did because I'm now aware of this.

Listen to the Barney Bigard and His Jazzopators version where Tizol plays the valve trombone. They played it earlier but the recorded version I think Ellington did it. It is Tizol's composition, not Ellington. Tizol asked Ellington if he could record it with his big band and Ellington obliged. Tizol was a long time member of the band.

The Popular album released in 1984 did not have Caravan on it. This recording must be from a compilation of Duke Ellington and his orchestra in the Swing Era around 1952. But thanks for the posting anyway. Love it.

Following is a quote from a book by Basilio Serrano, "Juan Tizol, HIs Caravan Through AMERICAN Life and Culture," Xlibris Corp. 2014. Ervin Drake as quoted by Serrano in his book, ( p. 317 ) wrote about Barney Bigard-clarinet, a member of the Ellington Band who complained about the loss of royalties, "I missed the boat for twenty - eight years on royalties. I didn't get a dime. It was all under Ellington's and Mills' name. You see in those days-- just to show you how stupid we were--we would write a number and sell it to Mills for twenty -five or fifty dollars. If we had kept the numbers with our names on, we would have had royalties for years and years." And Serrano goes on to say about what Lincoln Collier says Cootie Williams trumpet, told of Barney Bigard, "that Bigard went on to sue Duke Ellington over royalties. Collier wrote, "Barney Bigard always claimed the he wrote most of the tune ( Mood Indigo ). Eventually, he sued Ellington, had his name put on it and began collecting royalties." As quoted by Collier and mentioned by Serrano on his monumental work on Juan Tizol, Mr. Caravan.

On this day in 1960 {March 12th} Santa and Johnny performed "Caravan" on the ABC-TV program 'Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beech-Nut Show'... Two days later on March 14th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #48 and spent 8 weeks on the Top 100... The song composed in 1936 by Juan Tizol, first performed by Duke Ellington in that same year, and then first recorded by Barney Bigard and His Jazzopators later that year... R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}...
