You know, it's funny. I haven't listened to this in years - partly because it brings me back to a time in my life where I found myself without my mother, both of my grandmothers, two of my aunts - cancer's a bitch, man. And even looking at that sentence - separated with a couple of commas - I'm baffled by how short and meaningless it looks.
But I went ahead and put this on after a very late night full of discussion - right as the sun started to rise. I used to cry to this song - gut wrenching, belly and bowl-moving sobs - the kind where you hope and pray that you close your eyes and there's nothing left to open them to. No diarrhea hahaha - just pain. Teeth gnashing pain.
Two years later, and I'm drinking coffee watching the sunrise, listening to the gentle minor chords of Duke's piano caress the seeking, searching notes of Coltrane's sax. And it is bright.

Somehow it's going to be just fine.

Elvin Jones on drums cannot be discounted for the utterly butter smooth but engaging sound of this tune. His soft crescendo while executing a perfect seamless roll on the snare is just one example of his technical and interpretational perfection. I listen to the piano and the sax by the greats, but Elvin is up there, too.

Duke Ellington, the man at one point had the best band in the world, master composer, written over 1000 pieces was already a big name before the 40s in colaboration with John Coltrane, a religious figure, spiritual master, his playing is more known for his unrelentless sax attacks but chooses to play softer here to match the mood of the composition both playing in a dark room with the rest of John Coltrane's band. Fucking amazing atmosphere.

You know, I’ve been thinking a lot about what this song has been saying to me and how much life there is in life. I have really realized how powerful art and especially music is. It speaks something other-worldly that you can’t describe with words. It’s beautiful. This song is everything music says and speaks powerful and saddening feelings. Sometimes I can just lie in my bed, listen, or even think about this masterpiece and it makes me cry. Music just is - is everything you laid out before you, a canvas that you can change. Life is so meaningful, even when you might want to give up or stop trying, especially now in 2024 with everything going on. It pains me when people kill themself. Why do precious lives have to die so quickly when someone loves them? This tune is the perfect example of the beauty of our world. The atmosphere and open ended love that music creates is too great for me to say right here. Music makes you feel meaningful, while making you feel in search of more meaning in this world at the same time.

Music is the one thing amidst the storm around us that can hold together. Something I cannot describe.

I use to hang around with my best friend on that kind of music.
Drinking to expensive red wine, but for sure feeling like we earned it.. everytime we earned it.
Now a days, we have to miss each other for so long.
I could give anything to enjoy again that feeling. Grabbing your glass of wine, going outside of the jazz bar to have a smoke, to phylosophe about live and about what we didn't achieve, and what we would like to achieve.
My best friend is not dead or anything, but I do miss him.
