40 Day Dream
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I been sleepin' for 40 days and
I know I'm sleeping 'cause this dream's too amazin'
She got gold doorknobs where her eyes used to be
One turn and I learned what it really means to see

Ah, it's the magical mystery kind
Ah, must be a lie
Bye bye to the too good to be true kind of love
Oh, I could die
Oh now I can die

Oh I've been sleepin' for 60 days and
Nobody better pinch me
Bitch I swear I'll go crazy
She got jumper cable lips
She got sunset on her breath now
I inhaled just a little bit
Now I got no fear of death now

Ah, it's the magical mystery kind
Ah, must be a lie
Bye bye to the too good to be true kind of love
Oh, I could die
Oh now I can die

Ah ooh, ah ah, ah ooh ah ah, ah
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
Ooh, ah ah, ah ooh ah ah, ah
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah

Ooh, ah ah, ah ooh ah ah, ah
Yeah, yeah yeah yeah
Yeah

Ah, it's the magical mystery kind
Ah, must be a lie
Bye bye to the too good to be true kind of love

Oh, I could die
Oh now I can die

Overall Meaning

In "40 Day Dream," Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros describe a dream in which they have been sleeping for 40 days. The dream is so amazing that they know they are asleep. The dream features a woman with golden doorknob eyes. The singer learns the true meaning of seeing by turning one of the doorknobs. The lyrics describe the dream as "magical mystery" and "too good to be true." The singer realizes that this kind of love is not sustainable and must come to an end. They declare that they could die now that they have experienced the magic of the dream.

The repetition of the line "must be a lie, bye-bye to the too good to be true kind of love," hints that the singer is beginning to come to terms with the fact that this dream is not reality. The line "now I got no fear of death now," suggests that the magical experience the singer had in the dream has given them a sense of freedom and lack of fear.

The song conveys a sense of longing for something that is out of reach. The dream serves as an escape from reality, but ultimately the singer recognizes that it is not sustainable. The song speaks to the idea that sometimes we have to let go of things that are too good to be true and face reality.

My uncle Orpheo is the drummer in the band. I’ve been lucky enough to sit in and play with the band a few times for this song. Happiest feeling ever ❤️

That’s badass man !! any word on them planing to get back together ? 🤔

@effrumbobeffrum

@@djmfilms1999 not that I’m aware of. They didn’t necessarily part ways officially. As far as I know, they just got a bit of rockstar fatigue from being on the road for so long. There was twelve members before they all slinked off to do their own things. They’re all super cool and down to earth people, but that’s a lot of personalities for one traveling road show. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them reunite in some capacity in the coming years. I sure do miss those guys. And the backstage priveliges were also pretty rad 😉
