After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind ... but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles, California, United States. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus.
Its song "Home" was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100's 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.

Out this city
I'm so tired of leaving, tired of breathing dirt
Well I packed all my things today
Oh God! I could not stay!
Country calling, yeah I got to leave LA.
Well I packed all my things today
Oh God! I could not stay!
I'll be your man with strong arms, hold on
I'll be your man with strong arms, hold on
Love you, of you, anything that I might do!
Think I'm tasting clean air
Pouring through the window
Heading to the country, gonna raise a family there
I'm a mess like you wouldn't believe
All the stress I had to leave
Now bring me the country
Yeah, I've got to leave LA (moving on, moving on)
This, where I was born
All my life I called it home
Country calling, yeah I've got to leave LA
This place where I was born
You know I called it my home
Oh, country calling, I got to go away, away, away
I'll be your man with strong arms, hold on
I'll be your man with strong arms, hold on
Love you, of you
All I ask is here
The lyrics of this song Country Calling by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros convey a sense of restlessness, discontentment, and the need for escape. The singer is tired of the city life, tired of breathing dirt, and is packing all his things to move to the country. He is seeking a simpler life, wanting to taste clean air, and raise a family. The singer acknowledges that he is a mess and has had to leave all the stress behind. He calls the country, a place where he has never been before, and feels that it is his only option to leave LA. The chorus of the song conveys a sense of reassurance, with the singer promising to be a strong support for the loved one, saying "I'll be your man with strong arms, hold on". The song ends with the repetition of "country calling", emphasizing the singer's desire to leave the city behind and start anew in the countryside.
