After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind ... but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles, California, United States. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus.
Its song "Home" was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100's 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.

Give Me a Sign

If you are near
I want to know
I see your cold body
But I feel your soul
Give me a sign
Give me a sign
Creak the floor
Turn on the light
Give me a sign
Are you all right
If you are near
Then make it clear
Up to my mind and eyes
To again feel your love
If you are near
I want to know
My dearly departed
I can't let go
Bring me a sign
Bring me a sign
Then make it rain each year
The day that you died
Give me a sign
Give me a sign
I'll walk outside and I'll cry
Till it's light, I'm dying
To again feel love
Aaah
Lalala
Come as my kisser
Come as the rain
Come as my lover
Come back again
Come as my brother
Come as the sea
Come back my only one
Come back to me
Come back my mother
Come as my friend
Come back my only one
Come back again
Yeah yeah yeah
Come back again
Yeah yeah yeah
Come back my only one
Come back again
Come as my father (Don't you take me for her)
Come as the sea (Don't you take me for her)
Come back my only friend (Don't you take me for her memory)
Come back to me
Yeah
Only friend
Come back again
Come back my mother
Come back again
Come back my loving friend
Come back my friend
"Give Me a Sign" is a heart-wrenching ballad by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros that explores the pain of losing a loved one. The singer is desperate for a sign from their departed loved one, asking them to reveal their presence through any sign, big or small. The singer sees the cold body, but they feel the warmth of the soul within. They ask for a sign for reassurance, to know if they're okay or if they will see them again. The singer even asks for a sign from the sky, such as rain on the day that their loved one passed away. The last verse is the singer calling out to the departed loved one, offering to take them back in any form, as a kiss, rain, or a sea, and begs them to come back as soon as possible.
This song is tender and raw, expressing a depth of emotion that many people can relate to. The lyrics evoke feelings of heartbreak, longing, and desperation. The sense of longing and yearning for someone that we have lost and miss dearly is brought to life with the music and singer's melodic voice.
