I Don't Wanna Pray
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made good
I love my god, god made good
I love my god, god made bad
I love my god, god made me

But I don't wanna pray to my maker
I just wanna be what I see
Not just who I am, but the pink in golden land
And that wide wild sky over me
Help me to the sun, hey I'm looking everywhere
See I'm looking to become not the prayer, but the prayer.
And now I don't wanna pray, no
I say I don't wanna pray, no
And I, I don't wanna pray
I don't wanna pray

I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made good
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made bad
I love my god, god made

I don't wanna pray to my maker
I just wanna be feelin' free
Not like in a book, or the leaves of trees that shook
From a word that means only not a thing
Pardon god and mom, what I'm sayin' isn't fair
See I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
I say I don't wanna pray
I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

Not much good to talk, better to walk it
Not much good to take, better to give
We are gone forgiven and forgotten of our sins
I promise you my friend all that dies will live again
Pardon god and mom, what I'm sayin' isn't fare
See I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
No, they say I don't wanna pray
I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made good
I love my god, god made good

I love my god, god made bad
I love my god, god made me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "I Don't Wanna Pray" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros express a love for God and the various aspects of life God created such as love, hate, good, and bad. However, the singer does not want to pray to their maker, instead, they want to live according to what they see in the world, not just who they are, but the potential they have to become something more. The singer wants to become the essence of prayer, not just recite it.

The lyrics suggest that the singer does not want to adhere to traditional religious rituals and practices that may be contained in a book or handed down from generation to generation. The singer wants to experience spirituality in their own way, through nature, the sun, and the wide sky. The line "Pardon god and mom, what I'm sayin' isn't fair" suggests that the singer may feel guilty for not wanting to pray as their religious upbringing taught them. However, they still want to explore spirituality on their own terms.

Finally, the song ends with a message of redemption and forgiveness. The singer promises that all who have died will live again and that we are forgiven and forgotten of our sins. Despite not wanting to adhere to traditional religious practices, the singer still believes in the possibility of spiritual transformation and redemption.

Well I've seen her in the ocean, and I felt her in the breeze, but I don't feel the need to get down on my knees and pray for everything that you believe. Such an awesome line :)

wait can someone explain that line to me? i don't think i understand fully what he meant

Iñaki Díez Fernández

He's talking about religion, along the theme of the song "I don't wanna pray".
He basically says that he believes in some kind of god, he's seen it in the amazing oceans that our planet earth have, and in something as magical as the breeze that nature creates, but he does not have the need to put a name to that god or personalize it,.

He just believes that there is something else, and that we don't need to get down on our knees to pray to a imaginary god.

S Styles

Iñaki Díez Fernández oh wow thanks for explaining man :)

Best version for sure. The studio version is too quick I think. This one is slowed down just right.
