After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind ... but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles, California, United States. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus.
Its song "Home" was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100's 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.

And our daddies took a ride
And we walked out of the castle
And we held our head up high
Well we once were the Jesters
In your Kingdom by the sea
And now we're out to be the masters
For to set our spirits free, set free
We want to feel ya!
We don't mean to kill ya!
We come back to Heal ya, Janglin soul
Edward and the Magnetic Zeros
Well your wartime is funny
Your guns don't bother me
I said we're out to prove the truth of
The man from Galilee
Well your laws are for dummies, yes
Your institutions dead
I say we're out to blow the trumpet
To wake you all from bed, from bed
We want to feel ya!
We don't mean to kill ya!
We come back to heal ya, Janglin soul
Edward and the Magnetic Zeros
We carry the mail
We carry it home
We carry the mail now
We carry it home
Scare up your letters
Give us your tales
Blowing like whale now
To magnetic ears
Wow!
We want to feel ya!
We don't mean to kill ya!
We come back to heal ya, Janglin soul
Edward and the Magnetic Zeros
The lyrics of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros's song "Janglin" portrays a sense of rebellion and liberation against oppressive institutions and beliefs. The first verse starts with the reference to parental abandonment and casts the band members as former Jesters in a Kingdom by the sea. But now, they want to be the masters of their own spirit, free from any influence or control. The chorus emphasizes their desire to connect with people, to heal them, and to set their janglin soul free. It's a call for people to listen to the band, to let go of their worry, to come out and experience the world without fear.
The second verse embraces a more political message, an association with warfare and the man from Galilee (a reference to Jesus Christ). The lyrics allude to the difficulty of breaking away from institutionalized ways of thinking, of being told what to do and how to think. The band wants to confront these institutions, to express truths that contrast with the paradigm. The bridge emphasizes their communication skills and ability to inspire people to take action, to use the mail as a vehicle, probably figuratively if not literally, to send messages to each other.
Overall, the song seems to be a celebration of freedom, liberation, and creativity. The band wants to break free from established norms, beliefs and immerse themselves in life while staying connected with people. It's a reflection of the band's desire to cut loose from anything that holds them back in life and be true to themselves.
