After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind ... but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles, California, United States. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus.
Its song "Home" was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100's 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.

Walking through your street
With one guitar
And two dancing feet
Only one desire
That's left in me
I want the whole damn world
To come dance with me
(Oh, come dance with me)
I'm a hunter at bay
Come set you free
Over heartache and shame
I wanna see our bodies burning like the old big sun
I wanna know what we've been learning and learning from
Everybody want safety (safety love)
Everybody want comfort (comfort love)
Everybody want certain (certain love)
Everybody but me
I'm a man on fire
Walking down your street
With one guitar
And two dancing feet
Only one desire
That's left in me
I want the whole damn world
To come and dance with me
(Bah bah bah bah bah)
Yay, yay, come dance with me
Over heartache and rage
Come set us free
Over panic and strange
I wanna see our bodies burning like the old big sun
I wanna know what we've been learning and learning from
Everybody want romance (romance love)
Everybody want safety (safety love)
Everybody want comfort (comfort love)
Everybody but me
I'm a man on fire (he's a man on fire)
Walking down your street (walking down your street)
With one guitar (With one guitar)
And two dancing feet (two dancing feet)
Only one desire (one desire)
That's still in me (that's left in me)
I want the whole damn world (I want the whole damn world)
To come and dance with me (come and dance with me yeah)
The lyrics of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’s song “Man on Fire” encapsulate the essence of living without fear and embracing life to the fullest. The lyrics of “Man on Fire” are marked by a sense of rebellion against societal norms and expectations. The singer notes that “everybody wants safety, everybody wants comfort, everybody wants certain, everybody but me,” rejecting the status quo in favor of a more adventurous and spontaneous way of living. The song’s repeated refrain of “come dance with me” encourages listeners to join the singer in an embrace of life’s joyful possibilities, and the ecstatic chanting of “yah yah” creates a sense of communal celebration.
