After breaking up with his girlfriend, moving out of his house, and joining a 12-step program for addiction, Ebert began work on a story about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. According to Ebert, Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind ... but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos in Los Angeles, California, United States. In the summer of 2009, as Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert and Castrinos toured the country with a group of fellow musicians in a big white school bus.
Its song "Home" was voted number 15 on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100's 2009 countdown, the largest music poll in the world.

Perfect Time
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With a smile across his teeth and attached full of goo
And it cuts through my junk and smash up my eyes
And sings like a song before you die
Sunny day shooting breakfast bedheadings
Lunchtime wartime armaghedon
God tell me what to do
Never a punk
Smile so wide
Never have teeth
Sing so much sky
And smash up my junk and screws up my eyes
And sings like a song before you die
Mountaintop chokings afternoon rapists
primetime wartime I can't take it
God tell me what to do
Is it time for love?
Whatever colors you wear
They are gonna bleed someday
Some rainbow day
We'll have the perfect time
Skipping hugging laughing singing
Dancing romancing spinning singing
God tell me what to do
It's a perfect time for love
With you
The lyrics of "Perfect Time" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros depict a narrator grappling with the presence of a sinister individual, described as a "cold blooded mad man." The mad man has a malevolent smile, with teeth covered in goo, and his actions cut through the singer's emotional well-being and distort their perspective. They sing like a haunting melody before death. The lyrics then transition to a juxtaposition of sunny moments and the chaos of war, highlighting the paradoxical nature of life. The singer pleads to God for guidance, questioning what to do in such tumultuous times. Despite the dark undertones, the lyrics also express an optimism for love, suggesting that it is a perfect time for it.
The song explores the duality of emotions, touching on themes of confronting darkness and seeking love amidst chaos. It captures the conflicts and contradictions inherent in human existence, where moments of joy can coexist with suffering and uncertainty.
