After signing a contract with the Atlantic Records label Lava Records in 1994, his first major-label album, Honor Among Thieves, was issued in 1995. His second album, Misguided Roses, spawned I'll Be, a major single in 1998. Two more albums (Messenger and Far from Over) followed, but at the end of 2001, he split from Lava. In 2003 he released a collection of acoustic versions of songs both old and new called The Austin Sessions via ATC Records, a Nashville-based independent record label (at which McCain was the first artist signed following its creation in 2001). Mid-2004 saw the arrival of his first studio album in three years, entitled Scream & Whisper, which was released on another indie label, DRT Entertainment.
He has released two DVDs to date. The first was through ATC records in late 2002, called Mile Marker: Songs and Stories from the Acoustic Highway, and it consisted of interviews, live performances, and other material. The other was in late 2004, Tinsel & Tap Shoes. It was his first live concert DVD, recorded at The House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A new CD was released in April, 2006 titled, Lost in America. Edwin recently signed a contract with Vanguard Records. This album (#8) is said to be a true "rock 'n roll" collection.

Alive
Edwin McCain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Another spin around the sun
On this spec of life
In the universe
The gift of love
Is there for everyone
Angels working over time
That play all alone
A baby's born pure to the world
As the old man lays down his head and closes his out
With nothing said
Every year another promise is made
A pint of beer raised towards a better day
Lets find a star, a star to call our own
And make a wish, maybe we can make it home
Ain't it good to be alive?
To feel the sun, strong against your face
Strawberry blonde waves of silky hair
Spills over me like the milky way
Ain't it good to be alive?
Ain't it good to be alive?
Alive, alive? [Repeat: x 2]
Ain't it good to breathe the air
Another spin around the sun
On this spec of life in the universe
A little peace of life in everyone
Ain't it good to be alive?
Ain't it good to be alive?
To feel the sun strong against your face
It spills over me like the milky way
Alive, alive? [Repeat: x 2]
Edwin McCain's song "Alive" is an uplifting melody that talks about the beauty of life, love, and the universe. Through the lyrics, he highlights that being alive is a beautiful gift, and every year it comes with new promises, new beginnings, new opportunities, and another chance to live life to the fullest.
The song starts with Edwin describing the feeling of breathing the air and appreciating it, taking every moment as a chance to be alive. He further talks about how every spin around the sun is an opportunity to grow and evolve, and every individual is a tiny spec of life in the universe. The song then touches on the concept of love, highlighting that it is available for everyone, and angels work day and night to hold the hands of those who need it, even if they play alone.
The lyrics also describe the cycle of life, wherein a baby is born pure, and old people close their eyes, leaving the world behind with nothing said. Through the words, Edwin hints that although life has its ups and downs, and it seems like it is a tiny peace of life in the vast universe, it is still an incredible gift to be alive.
The chorus sets the tone of the song, wherein Edwin celebrates life, expressing how good it is to feel the sun against his face and how beautiful the world is, just like the milky way. Lastly, the song ends with a reminder that every individual is a tiny peace of life in the vast universe, and it is good to be alive.
In summary, "Alive" by Edwin McCain is a beautiful and uplifting song that celebrates the gift of life, the beauty of love, and the vast universe. It sends a message of hope and appreciation, encouraging listeners to cherish every moment they are alive.
