After signing a contract with the Atlantic Records label Lava Records in 1994, his first major-label album, Honor Among Thieves, was issued in 1995. His second album, Misguided Roses, spawned I'll Be, a major single in 1998. Two more albums (Messenger and Far from Over) followed, but at the end of 2001, he split from Lava. In 2003 he released a collection of acoustic versions of songs both old and new called The Austin Sessions via ATC Records, a Nashville-based independent record label (at which McCain was the first artist signed following its creation in 2001). Mid-2004 saw the arrival of his first studio album in three years, entitled Scream & Whisper, which was released on another indie label, DRT Entertainment.
He has released two DVDs to date. The first was through ATC records in late 2002, called Mile Marker: Songs and Stories from the Acoustic Highway, and it consisted of interviews, live performances, and other material. The other was in late 2004, Tinsel & Tap Shoes. It was his first live concert DVD, recorded at The House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A new CD was released in April, 2006 titled, Lost in America. Edwin recently signed a contract with Vanguard Records. This album (#8) is said to be a true "rock 'n roll" collection.

Coming Down
Edwin McCain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How was your trip to outer-space it sure did look like fun
You seem somewhat puzzled like you just can't readjust
You're covered in the battle scars and pitted up with rust
And your mom and dad have missed you and I'm sure your friends agree
There's no substitute for solitude and anonymity
I'm just coming down from this cloud ahead
World was spinning around the voices echo things that she said
I'm just coming down from this starry sky
I'm just glad to be here and most of all I'm thankful I'm alive
I hear the whispers in the crowd from jealous tongues
Shadows from the shameful light my ego's come undone
And your dignity has missed you and I'm sure your soul agrees
This fire sale has cost you your pace and sanity
[Chorus]
The path that I must take will lead me to despair
When I'm a million miles away will no one even care
[Chorus]
The song Coming Down by Edwin McCain is about a person who goes through a transformative journey in outer space, but upon returning to Earth, struggles with readjusting to their former life. The person has visibly changed with "battle scars" and having been "pitted up with rust." The lyrics suggest that the person has learned something valuable that they cannot explain to others, possibly feeling disconnected or isolated from those around them. Their journey has given them a new perspective, causing them to question their identity and priorities. The chorus centers around the person feeling thankful to be alive but struggling to come down from the high of their experience.
The song's lyrics perfectly capture the feeling of being changed by an experience that no one else can understand. It is common to feel disconnected or different after going through a transformative experience, and Coming Down speaks to the feeling of being alone in that experience. The song also brings up the idea that once you've experienced something life-altering, it's difficult to get people to care about the things that used to matter so much.
