After signing a contract with the Atlantic Records label Lava Records in 1994, his first major-label album, Honor Among Thieves, was issued in 1995. His second album, Misguided Roses, spawned I'll Be, a major single in 1998. Two more albums (Messenger and Far from Over) followed, but at the end of 2001, he split from Lava. In 2003 he released a collection of acoustic versions of songs both old and new called The Austin Sessions via ATC Records, a Nashville-based independent record label (at which McCain was the first artist signed following its creation in 2001). Mid-2004 saw the arrival of his first studio album in three years, entitled Scream & Whisper, which was released on another indie label, DRT Entertainment.
He has released two DVDs to date. The first was through ATC records in late 2002, called Mile Marker: Songs and Stories from the Acoustic Highway, and it consisted of interviews, live performances, and other material. The other was in late 2004, Tinsel & Tap Shoes. It was his first live concert DVD, recorded at The House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A new CD was released in April, 2006 titled, Lost in America. Edwin recently signed a contract with Vanguard Records. This album (#8) is said to be a true "rock 'n roll" collection.

Do Your Thing
Edwin McCain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If it makes you feel better
Go on and sing
If it makes you feel better
Shufflin' feet
Snuck up on me now
This young man's lost his way
He don't believe
He's caught up in the fray
He said I've got this great big
Bag full of dreams
And I don't know what to do
I said a wise man gave me
The key to life
And now I give it to you
And I said
Just do your thing
If it makes you feel better
You're running that race
A little bit faster now
Towards your finish lines
Such a disgrace
You missed all the beautiful
You can't buy back the time
So stop and love
And dance and live
And laugh until you cry
Don't wake up to realize that
Your time has passed you by
Just do your thing
If it makes you feel better
Go on and sing
If it makes you feel better
You can cling to your fears if you want to
To your heart and your soul
You must be true
Edwin McCain's song "Do Your Thing" is an uplifting and motivational song that urges listeners to live their lives authentically and follow their dreams. The song begins with the singer encouraging his listener to "just do your thing" and to do what makes them happy. The song's chorus repeats this message of positivity, with the lyrics "if it makes you feel better, go on and sing."
The second verse tells a story about a young man who has lost his way, caught up in the chaos of life and unsure of what to do with his dreams. The singer offers the young man the "key to life," which is to simply do what feels right and follow his heart. The last verse tells listeners that life is short, and that they should not waste it chasing goals that do not bring them joy. Instead, they should focus on love, happiness, and living life to the fullest.
Overall, "Do Your Thing" is a song about self-discovery, authenticity, and following one's own path. It encourages listeners to be themselves, to pursue their dreams, and to live life with joy and passion.
