Nobody
Edwin McCain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I couldn't love you your way
Yeah, but you came to see me day by day
But now I miss you all the time
Ain't no heart can be as sad as mine
Ain't nobody's fault but mine

Let me talk to ya
What will I do tomorrow?
Burden down and suffer with my sorrow
But cryin' ain't gonna help me knock
I made a bad mistake
Ain't nobody's fault but mine

God, one day gonna pay for my mistakes
By and by, by and by
It's gonna carry me straight to my grave
By and by, by and by

Let me tell you somethin'
Instead of you tryin' to spend my money
Yet your favorite word was to call me honey
I was just a doggone fool
Tryin' to be so doggone cool
Ain't nobody's fault but mine

Yeah, I got to pay for my mistakes
By and by, by and by
It's gonna carry me straight to my grave
By and by, by and by, oh

Made a big mistake, yeah
And I did somethin' wrong to you
Nobody's fault but mine
Ain't nobody's fault but mine

Somebody help me now

I need a little bit of help right now
Ain't nobody's fault but mine

Overall Meaning

In "Nobody's Fault But Mine," Edwin McCain confesses his regrets in love and acknowledges that the source of his sadness and misery is his own fault. The first verse depicts a relationship where the singer couldn't love the other person as the latter wanted, leading to the end of the relationship. The singer now misses his ex-lover and is full of remorse, but he cannot blame anyone else for his mistakes, “Ain't nobody's fault but mine.”

In the second verse, the singer is left alone to suffer and bear the burden of his regrets. He realizes that crying is not going to help him or solve anything. He takes responsibility for his actions and admits that he made a terrible mistake leading to his current predicament, which no one else is responsible for except him. The song ends with the singer acknowledging that he must face the consequences for his mistake. Only he can make things right and pay for his wrongful ways.

"Nobody's Fault But Mine" is a blues traditional song that has been covered by several artists, including Blind Willie Johnson, Led Zeppelin, and Nina Simone. Edwin McCain's acoustic guitar and raspy voice are the underpinnings of his interpretation of the song. The song's lyrics have been updated to give it a modern twist.
