Summer in the City
Eels Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights

In the summer, in the city

Overall Meaning

Eels’ “Summer in the City” is a song about the stifling heat and oppressive atmosphere of summertime in a bustling city. The first verse describes the physical discomfort that comes with summer in the city, with the heat causing sweat and dirt to accumulate on the singer’s neck. Despite the unpleasantness of the weather, the song provides a glimmer of hope in the form of the vibrant nightlife that emerges once the sun sets. In the second verse, the singer sets out to search for romance in the midst of the lively nighttime scene.

The chorus expresses a wistful desire for the days to be like the nights, when the heat and discomfort are less oppressive and the city comes alive with energy and excitement. The repeated use of the phrase “in the summer, in the city” serves as a reminder of the song’s central theme and reinforces the idea that this is a specific experience that can only be found in this specific time and place.

Overall, “Summer in the City” captures the contradictions and complexities of summertime urban life, contrasting the unpleasantness of the daytime with the invigorating and exciting nature of a city that never sleeps.

Sublime and totally wonderful
E is a genius

Cool version. It recalls Buddy Holly's slow tempo cover of Slippin and Slidin' or when Springsteen did an ocassional acoustic version of Born in the USA. Slowing it down allows you to rebuild the DNA of the song and tell the story again as it was a brand new story.
