Invited to perform an opening set for Nico Vega, Dan Reynolds met Aja Volkman in 2010. He invited her to help him finish some demos he was working on. The two began a collaborative process which they titled Egyptian. They recorded, produced, and released independently a four track digital EP.
The moon

There were two of you, it was such a shock;
There was one that cried on the telephone
And the other laughed deep inside my bone
Ahhhhhhh.
I can tell you this, when the full moon seed
It be plant in you, and it's what you need
Will eventually tear your world apart
Ahhhhhhh.
The Moon inside gets round and round
The Moon inside gets round
I can tell you this, when the female hand
She contours you, and you're like the sand
And you'd never guess you were in so deep
Till you try to walk, but you just can't creep
Ahhhhhhh.
Ahhhhhhh.
Ahhhhhhh.
The moon inside gets round and round
The moon inside gets round
Well she takes her time, but she arrives
With her candle stub and her carving knives
Like a pumpkin head you'll be lit within
So she severs you with a six inch grin
Ahhhhhhh.
The Moon inside gets round and round
And the Moon inside gets round
And round and round and round
And round and round and round
And round
And round
The moon inside gets round and round
And the moon inside gets round
The Moon is a song that's full of metaphoric language and lyrical ambiguity. At first glance, the song appears to be about love, but upon closer inspection, the lyrics suggest a darker meaning. The song is about the moon and how it affects people’s emotions and relationships. The phrase "The Moon inside gets round and round" represents the cyclical nature of emotions and relationships, which can be unpredictable and destructive. The song's opening lines describe a moment when the singer was surprised by someone at their door, suggesting that they were unprepared for what was about to happen. One person was crying on the phone while the other laughed, and these conflicting emotions further emphasize the unpredictable nature of relationships.
The second verse of the song suggests that the moon has a transformative effect on people. The lyrics suggest that when the moon's "full moon seed" is planted in someone, they will undergo a change and experience love in a profound way. However, this love will eventually consume their world, which further emphasizes the song's theme of unpredictability.
The final verse of the song is the most cryptic, with the moon represented as a female entity. The lyrics suggest that the moon takes its time, but eventually arrives with its "candle stub and carving knives." The metaphorical language in this verse suggests a sinister intent, and the lines "So she severs you with a six inch grin" depicts the overwhelming nature of emotions and relationships.
Overall, The Moon is a beautiful and haunting song that speaks to the theme of love and how it can be both beautiful and destructive.
