Dendrochronology
Eidola Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you seek out a teacher?
A vagrant man who roams the Danxia
In search of ancient eyes?
Well don′t be surprised if that affair proves to be nothing more than vaticide

Do you see yourself as a preacher?
A man who doles out consequence for a God fit to be tied
As the path intwined grows cold and dim
Inside the labyrinth of the mind
Take a step back
Breathe in the golden air and let your notions go

Tracing lineage through the wrists of kings
To find room to expand on how we came to be
A history through the rings of trees

Now I've heard you need a savior
Just tell me that it′s anyone but me
The greatest divide has never been kind
To anyone who tries to conquer pride

Destroy, rebuild
Every city, every culture, every monument
Until we're constant and loved

Like a child in the arms of impermanence
Like Siddhartha handing you the torch
And I see your faith in us
Do you see my faith in us?

When patience defies your art, (You lit the flame)
Take root in our hallowed souls. (Fate flows through me)
Kings of kings and ghosts of man. (Tell me your name)
Whisper softly

Tell me your name
Whisper softly

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eidola's song Dendrochronology explore themes of seeking knowledge and understanding, as well as the dangers of arrogance and self-righteousness in the pursuit of these goals. The first section asks if the listener is seeking out a teacher, someone who roams the land in search of ancient knowledge and wisdom. However, the lyrics caution against expecting too much from this pursuit, warning that it may ultimately lead to disappointment or even self-destruction.

The second section of the lyrics addresses the idea of personal belief and faith. The lyrics suggest that it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking oneself a preacher, confident in one's own beliefs and imposing those beliefs on others. However, again there is a warning against arrogance and intolerance, with the lyrics advising the listener to take a step back and let go of their preconceptions.

One particularly striking image in the song is the idea of tracing lineage through the wrists of kings, a metaphor for the way in which history can be read in the rings of a tree. This image suggests that our understanding of the past is fragile and tenuous, and that the stories we tell ourselves about our origins are never complete.

Overall, the lyrics of Dendrochronology are complex and thought-provoking, exploring themes of faith, wisdom, and hubris in a poetic and insightful way.

I’m obsessed with this band and their songs, the lyrics are a mystery because means a lot of themes that I can’t fully understand.

There's a couple interviews on the lyrical meanings of to Speak, To Listen and of Degeneraterra. They cover alot of spiritual and religious subjects, it all seems to tie together into a spiritual journey of understanding the condition of humanity and how to transcend that.

It's very well written stuff through and through.
