Invoking names like Dance Gavin Dance, Russian Circles, and the Dear Hunter, Eidola was founded in 2011 by Andrew Michael Wells (vocals), Brandon Bascom (guitar, vocals), James Johnson (bass), Matthew Dommer (guitar, vocals), and Matthew Hansen (drums). The band self-released its 2012 debut album, The Great Glass Elephant. Two years later the group inked a deal with Dance Gavin Dance guitarist Will Swan's indie label Blue Swan Records and issued Degeneraterra. In early 2017 they dropped the single "Amplissimus Machina" ahead of the arrival of their third studio long-player, To Speak, to Listen, which featured guest spots from Joey Lancaster, ex-A Lot Like Birds bassist Matthew Coate, and saxophonist Nicholas Pope. Guitarist Brandon Bascom left the fold shortly after the album's release and was replaced by Sergio Medina. In 2021, Eidola unveiled the fiery "Counterfeit Shines," their first new single in four years. It appeared on their fourth full-length effort, 2021's Rise-issued The Architect. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Divide
Eidola Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
tracing fire across the sky.
Killing all the daylight
in your un-dreaming eyes.
Would you hear a melody
if it didn't rhyme?
Could you feel a rhythm
For centuries we've squandered
everything that's sacred.
These centuries we've stuttered
to replicate the frequency.
I was born to remain,
you were born to resist.
All the lies you maintain,
all the ques that I missed.
We were the invulnerable everything with nothing left to feel.
As you and I divide, we'll compromise and learn to know what's real.
Your wanderlust
never carried us,
nor satisfied the need to be saved.
Your highness
never pardoned us,
now we wait in squalor as saints.
I am the tyrant,
you are the defeated.
I am the ocean
you are the depleted.
I am the beggar,
you are the wealthy.
I am the proud,
you are the one who made me.
Don't let go.
My arms are full and my burden heavy.
I need to know
that all of this is more than temporary.
We'll never know what's real.
The lyrics of Eidola's song Divide are packed with vivid imagery and powerful emotional overtones. The opening verse speaks to the sense of being lost and struggling, treading water and trying to find stability amidst the chaos of life. The use of fire as a metaphor for passion and energy is particularly poignant, contrasting with the notion of killing daylight and extinguishing hope.
The second verse raises deeper questions about the nature of human experience and perception. Can we appreciate art and beauty simply for their own sake, or do we require certain forms and structures to guide us? And can music and rhythm truly anchor us in time and help us make sense of our existence?
The refrain speaks to the idea of intergenerational conflict and struggle, as well as the complexity of power dynamics in human relationships. There is a sense that both the singer and the person being addressed are at odds with each other, born to different paths and struggling to find common ground. Despite this, there is also a hint of hope and possibility, with the promise that through compromise and understanding, we may come to know what is truly valuable and meaningful.
Overall, the lyrics to Divide are rich and multi-layered, touching on themes of loss, struggle, identity, and connection.

I've been treading water,
I have been struggling to stay afloat and make progress
tracing fire across the sky.
I have been trying to leave a mark and make an impact
Killing all the daylight
I have been draining the positivity and hope from your eyes
in your un-dreaming eyes.
In your eyes that have lost their sense of wonder and possibility
Would you hear a melody
Would you be receptive to something that doesn't fit expectations
if it didn't rhyme?
If it didn't conform to a predictable pattern that takes no risk
Could you feel a rhythm
Could you connect to something that is true and honest
seal your place in time?
Establish and affirm your significance in history
For centuries we've squandered
For a long time we've wasted and misused
everything that's sacred.
All the things that are meaningful and valuable
These centuries we've stuttered
We've struggled and stumbled for these many years
to replicate the frequency.
To mimic and copy what was once genuine and unique
I was born to remain,
I was created to stay the same and keep things as they are
you were born to resist.
You were meant to challenge and push back against the status quo
All the lies you maintain,
All the falsehoods you continue to uphold
all the ques that I missed.
All the signs and signals that went unnoticed by me
We were the invulnerable everything with nothing left to feel.
We were once impervious to harm and numb to emotion
As you and I divide, we'll compromise and learn to know what's real.
As we separate and conflict, we'll eventually find middle ground and discover what truly matters
Your wanderlust
Your desire to explore and seek adventure
never carried us,
Never took us anywhere significant
nor satisfied the need to be saved.
Nor fulfilled what we required to be rescued and saved from despair
Your highness
Your sense of superiority and entitlement
never pardoned us,
Never forgave or excused us for our shortcomings
now we wait in squalor as saints.
Now we suffer in poverty and misery despite our attempts to be righteous and holy
I am the tyrant,
I am the oppressive and controlling force
you are the defeated.
You are the defeated and subjugated party
I am the ocean
I am the vast and powerful entity that dominates
you are the depleted.
You are the drained and exhausted victim
I am the beggar,
I am the one who is impoverished and lacking
you are the wealthy.
You are the one who is rich and abundant
I am the proud,
I am the one who is arrogant and haughty
you are the one who made me.
You are the one who created and enabled my existence
Don't let go.
Don't give up or lose hope
My arms are full and my burden heavy.
I am weighed down by my responsibilities and obligations
I need to know
I require assurance and confirmation
that all of this is more than temporary.
That everything has a purpose and significance beyond just passing by
We'll never know what's real.
We can never fully understand or grasp the truth
