Invoking names like Dance Gavin Dance, Russian Circles, and the Dear Hunter, Eidola was founded in 2011 by Andrew Michael Wells (vocals), Brandon Bascom (guitar, vocals), James Johnson (bass), Matthew Dommer (guitar, vocals), and Matthew Hansen (drums). The band self-released its 2012 debut album, The Great Glass Elephant. Two years later the group inked a deal with Dance Gavin Dance guitarist Will Swan's indie label Blue Swan Records and issued Degeneraterra. In early 2017 they dropped the single "Amplissimus Machina" ahead of the arrival of their third studio long-player, To Speak, to Listen, which featured guest spots from Joey Lancaster, ex-A Lot Like Birds bassist Matthew Coate, and saxophonist Nicholas Pope. Guitarist Brandon Bascom left the fold shortly after the album's release and was replaced by Sergio Medina. In 2021, Eidola unveiled the fiery "Counterfeit Shines," their first new single in four years. It appeared on their fourth full-length effort, 2021's Rise-issued The Architect. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Humble Ledger
Eidola Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That we are deserving of the penance and the sacred dirt
′Cause our constitution is buried in the soil
While our ambition seeks to ascertain and toil in the high
Do you really know what's real anymore?
Do you really know what′s real?
Invite ourselves as conduits
To congregate in lieu
Of all the disparity we hold in our hearts
And the unanswered questions that tear us apart
Do you really know what's real anymore?
Do you really know what's real?
I could show you everything I know
But I was told that honest art is dead
You could give me a bed when I′ve got nowhere to go
But you were told that good nature is all in your head
When will we lead ourselves to water
And drink our souls clean in the well?
When will we see our sins as fodder
Transcend the judgement and bid farewell?
When we are one
We will discern a meaning
When we are one
We are consecrated
We are consecrated
The song "Humble Ledger" by Eidola speaks about the struggle to prove oneself and the need to regard the world we live in with authenticity. In the first verse, the lyrics emphasize the importance of hard work and earning one's place in society. The line "our constitution is buried in the soil" could refer to the idea that an individual's identity and values are rooted in their environment and upbringing; however, it is easy to lose sight of this when trying to achieve one's aspirations in life. The following line, "while our ambition seeks to ascertain and toil in the high," highlights the difficulty of balancing these two competing forces. The lyrics are a reflection of the modern age, where individuals are constantly striving for success but can struggle to stay grounded in who they are.
The second verse discusses the importance of coming together as a community to address the issues that weigh heavy on our hearts. The lyrics mention "all the disparity we hold in our hearts" and "the unanswered questions that tear us apart," which suggest that there is an unspoken disconnect amongst people that can only be resolved through collective efforts. By doing so, the lyrics imply that we can rediscover what is real and what truly matters.
The chorus repeats the question "Do you really know what's real anymore?" before stating that "when we are one, we will discern a meaning." The message is clear - when we come together and see things as they are, we can find a sense of purpose and significance in our lives. Ultimately, the song is an appeal to stay true to oneself and to recognize the power of unity in finding meaning and direction in life.

First we must prove we can work
We need to work hard to prove ourselves worthy
That we are deserving of the penance and the sacred dirt
We need to show that we deserve to make amends and be purified
'Cause our constitution is buried in the soil
Our essence and values are deeply rooted in nature
While our ambition seeks to ascertain and toil in the high
While we strive for greatness and success
Do you really know what's real anymore?
Are you unsure of what is true and genuine?
Then we must move
We need to take action
Invite ourselves as conduits
We need to welcome and facilitate change
To congregate in lieu
To gather together and replace
Of all the disparity we hold in our hearts
To eliminate the division and conflict we feel within
And the unanswered questions that tear us apart
And the unresolved issues that cause rifts between us
I could show you everything I know
I am willing to share my knowledge with you
But I was told that honest art is dead
However, some believe that genuine expression is no longer valued
You could give me a bed when I've got nowhere to go
You could offer me refuge when I have nowhere else to turn
But you were told that good nature is all in your head
But some say that kindness and compassion are not practical or necessary
When will we lead ourselves to water
When will we take ourselves to the source of purity and wisdom?
And drink our souls clean in the well?
And cleanse our spirits and minds of impurities?
When will we see our sins as fodder
When will we view our mistakes and wrongs as fuel for change and growth?
Transcend the judgement and bid farewell?
Rise above criticism and move on?
When we are one
When we are united
We will discern a meaning
We will find purpose and understanding
We are consecrated
We are purified and sanctified
We are consecrated
We are purified and sanctified
