Frères ennemis
Eiffel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nous étions deux dans la cour
Au milieu des serpents de mer
Et des Jeanne d’Arc tout autour
Aux yeux de biches-panthères
Avions le monde à nos pieds
Et les pieds pris dans nos nerfs
Comme envoûtés volontaires
Au mental siamois

Plus rien ne m’importe
Quand j’pense à toi
Plus je m’insupporte
Voyez par le Judas
Couler le sang des nations
Le règne, la puissance, la gloire
Au nom des mornes patries
Tous frères ennemis

On s’est dit ce n’est qu’un Je
Où l’humanité s’entre-Tu
Que dans le miroir des clameurs
Tu puisses te refaire une laideur
Et qu’un fou avec un fou
Dans des chiottes fermées à clef
Soient défoncés volontaires
Au mental siamois

Plus rien ne m’importe
Quand j’pense à toi
Plus je m’insupporte
Nos p’tits poèmes cardiaques
Bouffer la pharmacie
Ego et Je de massacre
Dragées hautes et tragédies
Tous frères ennemis
Plus rien ne m’importe
Quand j’pense à toi
Plus je m’insupporte
Voyez par le Judas
Couler le sang des nations
Le règne, la puissance, la gloire

Jusqu’aux lambeaux des fratries
Tous frères ennemis

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eiffel's song "Frères ennemis" tell a story of two people who were once close, but are now enemies. The first verse describes how they used to be together in a courtyard, surrounded by all sorts of people (including sea serpents and Joan of Arc) and how they felt invincible. They were mentally connected, but at the same time, trapped in their own nerves. The second verse goes on to say that the only thing that matters to the singer now is the person they used to be with. They watch through a peephole as nations bleed, and they reflect on the destruction that patriotism can cause. They acknowledge that they and the person they were once close to are now enemies, but they also recognize that they are not alone in this cause; everyone is a part of this struggle.

The third verse shifts back to the relationship between the two characters. They once agreed that it was just a game of identity where people destroy each other. They would lock themselves in a bathroom together, getting "high" on one another's energy. However, they allowed themselves to get consumed by their own egos, which led to terrible consequences. The chorus repeats, reinforcing the idea that they are now enemies, but they still cannot let go of each other. The song ends with a plea that all human beings should be united and stop waging war.
