However, Neubauten soon outgrew the confines of even the broad scope of industrial music. In their 25-plus years, they have produced a dozen studio albums, live records, a remix album and EP, scored theatre pieces, and more.
Lead vocalist Blixa Bargeld is perhaps the best-known member of the group, both for his work with Neubauten and as guitarist for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. His fellow founding members Alexander Hacke and N.U. Unruh have likewise been active in various musical roles outside the group over the years.
Bassist Mark Chung was a member of the group from 1981 to 1994. He founded the publishing house Freibank Music Publishing to handle business affairs for Neubauten and other groups, and has continued in this role (concurrently serving as a senior vice-president of Sony Music International for nine years). Percussionist FM Einheit, was a member from 1981 to 1995, and has also been active as a solo artist and member of groups such as Gry.
Since 1997 the group has also included guitarist Jochen Arbeit and percussionist Rudi Moser.
Neubauten's most recent work has been available exclusively to subscribers to their online home, www.neubauten.org. Neubauten completed the third incarnation of their online project in November 2007 and were touring Europe in 2008 in support of their latest album Alles Wieder Offen.
Currently Einstürzende Neubauten is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a tour through Europe and the United States. In October/November 2010 the band is releasing Strategies Against Architecture IV, the fourth album in the archival compilation series by Neubauten which collates the band’s output from 2002-2010.
How Did I Die?
Einstürzende Neubauten Lyrics

Pockmarked fields on either side
I was meant to be all safe how did I die?
How did I die? Or didn't I?
Un sursaut, une crispation mon corps soudain
Comme voulant s'engloutir dans la terre
How did I die? How did I die?
I fell into a ditch inside an A7V
On the end facing mephisto is it's name
How did I die? How did I die?
Or didn't I?
Ein schwarzes Biest ein Splitterregen
Über den Bäumen zerspringt und niedergeht
How did I die? How did I die?
Or didn't I?
Didn't I die at all?
Now there is only that sinister brown belt
A strip of murdered Nature it
Seems to belong to
Another world every sign of humanity has been
Swept away the woods and
Roads have vanished like
Chalk wiped from a board of the villages
Nothing remains but gray smears
Where stone walls have
Tumbled together a confused mass
Of troubled earth
Columns of muddy smoke spurt
Up continually as high
Explosives tear deeper into this ulcered area
How did I die? I fell from the sky
Or didn't I?
I filled my mouth with water
So the bullet could suceed how did I die?
How did I die? Did I die by my own hand?
Or didn't I? How did I die?
Or didn't I die at all?
How did we die? Or didn't we?
Didn't we die at all? We didn't die
We didn't die
We are back with a different song
We didn't die we didn't die
We're just singing a different song
We are back with a change of weather
Ein anderer Wind, ein neues Lied
We didn't die we didn't die
We give you a different song
Okookookookooskrookookookookoo
The difference is in the song
Okookookookooskrookookookookoo
– difference makes the song we didn't die
We didn't die we didn't die
We didn't die
The lyrics to Einstürzende Neubauten's song "How Did I Die?" are rich with imagery and ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations. The song seems to be exploring themes of war, death, and transformation. It begins with the singer in a crater, surrounded by pockmarked fields, questioning how they could have died despite being meant to be safe. There is confusion and uncertainty about the nature and cause of their death. The lyrics transition into a description of falling into a ditch inside an A7V, a reference to a German tank used during World War I. Again, the question arises: how did they die, or did they?
The song then takes on a more abstract tone, describing a bleak landscape where all signs of humanity have been swept away. The destruction is portrayed vividly as "column of muddy smoke spurts up continually," and the woods and roads have disappeared. This imagery paints a picture of devastation and chaos. Towards the end of the song, there is a shift in perspective, with the singer proclaiming that they didn't die at all. They are back with a different song, a different perspective. The lyrics suggest a sense of resilience and transformation, as the singer declares that they are still alive, singing a new tune.
