Many of her songs are in Faroese, some are in Icelandic and the three albums leading up to Slør were all mostly in English. On Slør she returned to singing in only Faroese.
Far Away
Eivør Pálsdóttir Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Tell me stories
Before I go to sleep
Tell me
What you're thinking
Is it funny
Is it sweet
Far,
Far away
From here
Teach me
Like you used to
How to steer a rocking boat
Like you do
Meet me
Down at the harbor
Let's sail the
Ocean blue
Far,
Far,
Far away
From here
You are far,
Far,
Far away
But near
I still
See you
And your footstep
In the sand
Memories shape me
Like clay in your hand
You are far,
Far,
Far away
From here
Far,
Far,
Far away
But near
In Eivør Pálsdóttir's song "Far Away," the singer expresses their desire to hear stories before going to sleep. They ask the person they are speaking to, who could potentially be a parent or a beloved individual, to share their thoughts and to tell them funny or sweet stories. The lyrics evoke a sense of comfort and safety, as the singer seeks to hold on to these memories and create a lasting bond with the individual.
The song then takes a turn towards the idea of distance, as the singer talks about being far away. The phrase "Far, Far, Far away" is repeated throughout the song, creating a sense of longing and loneliness. The singer remembers being taught how to steer a rocking boat and expresses the desire to go out on the ocean with the person who taught them. Despite the physical distance, the singer feels that the person they are addressing is near to them emotionally. The song ends with the singer reflecting on the memories that the person has left behind, and how those shape them.

Cuéntame historias
Antes de que vaya a dormir
Dime
Que estas pensando
Es gracioso
Es dulce
Lejos,
Lejos,
Muy lejos
De aquí
Enseñame
Como solías hacer
Cómo conducir un bote mecedor
Como tu lo haces
Conoceme
Abajo en el puerto
Naveguemos el
océano azul
Lejos,
Lejos,
Muy lejos
De aquí
Tu estás lejos,
Lejos,
Muy lejos
Pero cerca...
En memoria a su Padre... Páll E. Jacobsen

Deep feelings do not have the language barrier. My son, listening to this song in a documentary about the Faroe Islands, was so excited that his eyes shone because he was on the verge of crying.

@DocHikes
After I landed in the Faroe Islands, my Airbnb host was sweet enough to pick me up and bring me to their home since my car hire didn't work out. Susanna had the radio playing while we drove to Kirkjubøur. It had just rained and the sun had burnt through the clouds. Thousands of cascades were pouring down the cliffs and this song came onto the radio. Eivør, I listen to this song and am reminded of the greatest memories and the kindest people and the incredible beauty of your homeland. Thank you for breathing this into the world and giving so many of us warm hearts and refreshed souls.
