True Love
Eivør Pálsdóttir Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come death she said
Come easeful future
Death how I long
For your nurture

Breathe
Breathe into me
Come death only friend
Nothing is born of this pain
Take this gift upon thy self
House of pain
This body is too small a chamber

Breathe
Breathe into me
Breathe
Breathe into me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

Whatever is true is with me
My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

Whatever is true is with me
My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

Whatever is true is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

Whatever is true is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

My true lover is with me
My true lover is with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eivør Pálsdóttir's song "True Love" are a poetic exploration of the acceptance of death as an inevitable and welcome part of life. The singer longs for death as a release from the pain and confinement of her mortal body, calling it her "only friend" and asking for its nurturing embrace. As she prepares to let go of life, she implores death to breathe into her, to fill her with the peace she so desires.

Throughout the song, the singer repeats the refrain "My true lover is with me," perhaps referring to death or to an unseen force that is guiding her towards it. She asserts that "Whatever is true is with me," suggesting that death is a natural part of the universal truth that surrounds and encompasses us all. In the end, the acceptance of death allows the singer to transcend her physical limitations and embrace a greater truth.

The lyrics of "True Love" are certainly open to interpretation, but a common theme throughout is the idea of letting go and embracing what is beyond our control. The song encourages listeners to come to terms with the inevitability of death and the power of love and acceptance to help guide us through that journey.

What a beautiful tragic story on the northern landscape! The author left the finale open, but I want to believe that the girl waited for her lover and they lived their happy years together. The actor brilliantly played the role of Death. Expressive face, subtle emotions, the birth of a smile. I hope he continues his acting career. It was the most beautiful thing I have seen in my life. Thanks Eivor and the team!

There is actually a full video to this. The conclusion was that she wasn't in love with the boy, she was in love with death itself- you could see her reach for the next death man.
