As a member of Company Flow, he honed his production skills alongside DJ Mr. Len and Bigg Jus. His unique style helped Company Flow gain critical, then popular success, culminating in 1997 with Funcrusher Plus. Eventual differences between the group & label Rawkus, lead to El-P & Len leaving the label in 2000.
El-P then started his own record label, Definitive Jux. Of the many albums he has helped produce (most on Definitive Jux), the most influential and successful has been Cannibal Ox's album, The Cold Vein (2001). In 2002 he released his debut album, Fantastic Damage, which received critical acclaim. His follow-up, I'll Sleep When You're Dead, hit stores in March of 2007. It featured a wide range of artists, including The Mars Volta, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, and Cat Power. El-P has also contributed productions and guest raps to albums by DJ Krush, Aesop Rock, Murs, Cage, Mr. Lif, Prefuse 73, Del the Funky Homosapien, Mike Ladd, The High and Mighty, Aceyalone, and Alec Empire on the first Handsome Boy Modeling School album.
Cannibal Ox member Vordul Mega can be heard on "Linda Tripp", El-P's rebuttal to Sole's "Dear Elpee". He was also selected to work on Rage Against the Machine frontman Zach de la Rocha's solo album.
In 2012, El-P released his 3rd solo album, Cancer 4 Cure, on Fat Possum Records. The album was released to general acclaim, aggregating a score of 84 out of 100 on Metacritic.
In 2013, Meline formed rap duo Run the Jewels, with Michael Render (aka Killer Mike).

Up All Night
El-P Lyrics

Scandal bedlam, broken burnt up
New New York speed, new speed, true speed
Universe dirt, birds of loose leaf
Form the casbah, bring the bleeders
Sanity fist fucks, such allegiance
Born a trash maid, grew in garbage
I see you all regardless
I know what lies are like
I might've been born yesterday, sir
But I stayed up all night
I see you all regardless
I know these times of fright
We might've been born yesterday, friends
But we stayed up all night, right
I'm a young man, I'm unhappy
We deserve that, dream collapsin'
I'm just one man, so damn angry
Truth confusion, scared with truthers
Hide your foil, hide your face
Say hi horsemen, higher stakes
Hi again, well, how about that?
Well, how the fuck else can I react?
I see you all regardless
I know what lies are like
I might've been born yesterday, sir
But I stayed up all night
I see you all regardless
I know these times of fright
We might've been born yesterday, friends
But we stayed up all night, right
Hell you're too preachy, you don't reach me
Right and wrong's hard, you say easy?
Okay maybe, I was normal
On some rap shit, up raw backspin
Paws collapsin', back to windmill
Innocent thrill, some old-fashioned
Moral D-Ray, I'm no different
I wish my whole still existed
From the blades, necessitate shit
Lifespan program, final digits
You're my daddy, you'll protect me
I need guidance to live correctly
I can't fight you, fear of the ether
I'm the servant, you're the teacher
What the fuck man? Oh, so sorry
That's the implant talking for me
I see you all regardless
I know what lies are like
I might've been born yesterday, sir
But I stayed up all night
I see you all regardless
I know these times of fright
We might've been born yesterday, friends
But we stayed up all night, right, right, right
The lyrics of "Up All Night" by El-P present a complex and fragmented narrative that touches upon themes of identity, power, and resistance. The song starts with the lines "I'm from Brooklyn, vandals bedrocks / Scandal bedlam, broken burnt up," evoking a sense of place and history that is both gritty and defiant. The chorus, which repeats throughout the song, can be read as a manifesto of sorts, proclaiming the singer's awareness and endurance: "I might've been born yesterday, sir / But I stayed up all night."
The verses are more elusive, using vocabulary and syntax that suggest both inner turmoil and cultural critique. The phrase "scandal bedlam" could refer to the chaos of the contemporary world or the inner turmoil of the singer, while the image of the "birds of loose leaf" evokes a sense of fragility and futility. The lines "Born a trash maid, grew in garbage / Mutant hostage, do the knowledge" suggest a harsh upbringing and a rebellious spirit that seeks knowledge as a form of liberation. Later in the song, the singer addresses an authority figure who represents both guidance and oppression: "You're my daddy, you'll protect me / I need guidance to live correctly."
Overall, "Up All Night" by El-P is a dense and thought-provoking song that rewards close listening and interpretation. Its fragmented structure and elliptical language make it a fitting soundtrack for those who feel alienated by the dominant culture and seek to carve out their own path.
