Overall Meaning

The lyrics to El Coco's song "Cocomotion" are an invitation to dance and make love on the dance floor. The repeated phrase "Come on, let's do the Cocomotion" encourages listeners to join in the fun, while the line "Make romance when you dance" suggests that the dance is an opportunity to connect with a partner in a sensual way. The playful repetition of "Do it, do it good" reinforces the joyous and carefree spirit of the song.

The use of the word "Cocomotion" is a reference to the disco era's trend of creating dances with catchy names, like the Hustle or the Electric Slide. The word "coco" may also be a nod to the Latin American influence on disco music, as "coco" is a Spanish word for coconut and a common component of Caribbean music.

In addition to its danceable rhythm and catchy lyrics, "Cocomotion" is notable for its innovative use of electronic music. The song features a prominent synthesizer line, which was still a relatively new instrument at the time of its release in 1977. The use of electronic music was a hallmark of the disco era, and "Cocomotion" is a prime example of how the genre blended traditional elements of funk and soul with the futuristic sounds of synthesizers and drum machines.

Overall, "Cocomotion" is a classic disco gem that captures the spirit of the era in its joyful celebration of dancing, romance, and electronic music.

Bought this album the first week it was outΒ and played at the NYC dance club "New York, NY" in 1977.Β  Dancing to this song clearly separated the amateurs out from those whoΒ knew how to dance.Β  Timing and the beat was perfection.Β  God I miss those days.

And this before the time dance music started to get faster and faster to accommodate those thought all disco was uptempo, after seeing Saturday Night Fever. This song is more in the style of the "pretty" dance music of the mid '70s (Frenesi by The Ritchie Family for one).
