Since the formation in 2001 the band grew from a solo project to a band with 5 members. The first to join was Skaldir who joined Joran in 2001 and was in the band for two years. In 2002 Katrin was added to the band. And in 2004 Nico joined and Skaldir rejoined after two years of abscence.
Sound: Mainly ethereal supported by ac. guitar, tinwhistle, low whistle, violin and cello. Elane's sound also includes elements of darkwave and medieval music.

Elane's song "Tears and the Perfect Light" speaks of the pain of separation and the struggle to let go of someone you've loved, even when they've chosen to walk away. The opening lines compare the rain that looms overhead to the tears that the singer is holding inside. The emotions are heavy, as the reference to the cave suggests. However, the line "keeping in the time" shows that there were good times that were had in this cave, that this place and this relationship have held some special meaning.
The second verse continues with the idea that it's time for the singer to find themselves again. They once had something that was lost and need to rediscover that part of themselves. However, when looking back, they still remember the moments of vulnerability when they gave their tears to the other. The chorus repeats the same sentiment twice: if the other wants to go, they can go, but the singer will follow eventually. The repeating idea shows the difficulty of letting go of someone you've cared for.
