Elba Ramalho was born in the rural area of Conceição, in Vale do Piancó. In 1962, the family moved to the city of Campina Grande, also in Paraíba. Her father became the owner of the local theater. Daughter of a musician, she became interested in music still as a teenager.
In 1966, she participated, for the first time, in a performance on stage, in the Choir of the Fundação Artística e Cultural Manuel Bandeira, of which she was a member, with "Evocação do Recife". The Manuel Bandeira and Cecília Meireles Talking Choirs gained fame and started to be seen all over the Northeast, and Elba, who made her first presentation on stage together with them, soon became the highlight in the presentations. She starred in the poetic montages of Castro Alves, Thiago de Mello, Lindolfo Bell, Carlos Pena Filho and Figueiredo Agra. He participated in the montages of the plays "Ministro do Supremo" and "Diálogo das Carmelitas."
In 1968, while attending college of Economics and Sociology at the Federal University of Paraíba, she formed the ensemble As Brasas, in which she acted as drummer, which later became a theater group. However, Elba never stopped singing, and performed in several festivals throughout the Northeast.
In 1979, she released her first album, "Ave de Prata", and since then she has consolidated her position as one of the main Brazilian singers in activity. On her father's side, she is a cousin of fellow singer Zé Ramalho.
She has two Latin Grammys for her albums: Qual o Assunto Que Mais Lhe importa?, released in 2008, and Balaio de Amor, 2009, in the category Best Brazilian Roots Album: Regional and Tropical. In over 35 years of career, Elba Ramalho has sold more than 10 million albums. She received from the Art Critics Association of São Paulo the award "Best Show of the Year" on two occasions: in 1989 for the show Popular Brasileira and in 1996 for the show Leão do Norte.

É um andar bem profundo
Vai onde tem um forró
É uma alegria, uma andança
Meu coração não se cansa
De uma festa encontrar
Um dia talvez eu pare
Ou qualquer dia encostar
E olho o povo dançar
Mas por enquanto eu me entendo
Apreciar as estrelas
Olhar pro céu e vê-las
Piscar em luzes no chão
Eu cá por mim me contento
E sem querer ofende-las
Ao invés de olhar estrelas
Olho pro meu coração
Pois é assim meu andar
Nos cafundós desse mundo
Não me engano ou confundo
Nem sei pra onde vou ir
Só saberei se chegar
Finalmente ao meu destino
Não cometi desatino
De planejar ao partir
O meu andar pela vida
É sem controle errante
É como sonho de amante
Que acredita no amor
E nessa trilha perdida
No rumo desconhecido
O meu andar acredito
Cura ferida e a dor
Cura ferida e a dor
O meu andar pela vida
É sem controle errante
É como sonho de amante
Que acredita no amor
E nessa trilha perdida
No rumo desconhecido
O meu andar atrevido
Cura ferida e a dor
Cura ferida e a dor
Cura ferida e a dor
Cura ferida e a dor
Cura ferida e a dor
The lyrics of "Olhando o Coração" by Elba Ramalho tell the story of a person who travels the world in search of joy and happiness in the form of parties and forró dances. The singer admits that maybe one day they will stop and observe the people dancing, but for now, they find contentment in looking at the stars and the lights on the ground. The person's journey through life is like that of a lover who believes in love, but hasn't found their way yet. They trust that their wandering path will ultimately lead them to healing and curing their pain.
The lyrics capture the essence of a free-spirited individual who is not afraid to take risks and wander down unknown paths. It's a journey of self-discovery, and the person is comfortable with the uncertainty of not knowing where they are going or what they will find along the way. The search for happiness is a constant theme in the song, but the singer emphasizes the importance of finding contentment within oneself and looking inward, rather than always seeking outside sources of joy.
Overall, "Olhando o Coração" is a beautifully written song that speaks to the universal human experience of searching for meaning and happiness in life.

O meu andar pelo mundo
My journey around the world
É um andar bem profundo
Is a profound journey
Vai onde tem um forró
Goes where there's a forró dance
É uma alegria, uma andança
It's a joyous, wandering journey
Meu coração não se cansa
My heart never tires
De uma festa encontrar
Of finding a party
Um dia talvez eu pare
Maybe someday I'll stop
Ou qualquer dia encostar
Or maybe one day I'll lean against a wall
Talvez cabreira eu encare
Maybe I'll face a difficult situation
E olho o povo dançar
And watch the people dance
Mas por enquanto eu me entendo
But for now, I understand myself
Apreciar as estrelas
To appreciate the stars
Olhar pro céu e vê-las
To look at the sky and see them
Piscar em luzes no chão
Twinkling on the ground
Eu cá por mim me contento
I'm content with myself
E sem querer ofende-las
Without wanting to offend them
Ao invés de olhar estrelas
Instead of looking at the stars
Olho pro meu coração
I look at my heart
Pois é assim meu andar
For this is my journey
Nos cafundós desse mundo
In the depths of this world
Não me engano ou confundo
I'm not fooled or confused
Nem sei pra onde vou ir
And I don't know where I'll go
Só saberei se chegar
I'll only know when I arrive
Finalmente ao meu destino
Finally at my destination
Não cometi desatino
I didn't make any mistakes
De planejar ao partir
By planning my departure
O meu andar pela vida
My walk through life
É sem controle errante
Is aimless without control
É como sonho de amante
It's like a lover's dream
Que acredita no amor
That believes in love
E nessa trilha perdida
And on this lost path
No rumo desconhecido
On the unknown path
O meu andar acredito
I believe my walk
Cura ferida e a dor
Heals wounds and pain
Cura ferida e a dor
Heals wounds and pain
Cura ferida e a dor
Heals wounds and pain
Cura ferida e a dor
Heals wounds and pain
Cura ferida e a dor
Heals wounds and pain
