Elba Ramalho was born in the rural area of Conceição, in Vale do Piancó. In 1962, the family moved to the city of Campina Grande, also in Paraíba. Her father became the owner of the local theater. Daughter of a musician, she became interested in music still as a teenager.
In 1966, she participated, for the first time, in a performance on stage, in the Choir of the Fundação Artística e Cultural Manuel Bandeira, of which she was a member, with "Evocação do Recife". The Manuel Bandeira and Cecília Meireles Talking Choirs gained fame and started to be seen all over the Northeast, and Elba, who made her first presentation on stage together with them, soon became the highlight in the presentations. She starred in the poetic montages of Castro Alves, Thiago de Mello, Lindolfo Bell, Carlos Pena Filho and Figueiredo Agra. He participated in the montages of the plays "Ministro do Supremo" and "Diálogo das Carmelitas."
In 1968, while attending college of Economics and Sociology at the Federal University of Paraíba, she formed the ensemble As Brasas, in which she acted as drummer, which later became a theater group. However, Elba never stopped singing, and performed in several festivals throughout the Northeast.
In 1979, she released her first album, "Ave de Prata", and since then she has consolidated her position as one of the main Brazilian singers in activity. On her father's side, she is a cousin of fellow singer Zé Ramalho.
She has two Latin Grammys for her albums: Qual o Assunto Que Mais Lhe importa?, released in 2008, and Balaio de Amor, 2009, in the category Best Brazilian Roots Album: Regional and Tropical. In over 35 years of career, Elba Ramalho has sold more than 10 million albums. She received from the Art Critics Association of São Paulo the award "Best Show of the Year" on two occasions: in 1989 for the show Popular Brasileira and in 1996 for the show Leão do Norte.

Não maltrate o meu amor
Pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô
Não maltrate o meu amor
Um dia desse
Eu fui dançar lá em Pedreira
Gostei da brincadeira
Zé Caxangá era o tocador
Mas só tocava pisa na fulô
Pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô
Não maltrate o meu amor
Pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô
Não maltrate o meu amor
Eu vi menina
Que nem tinha doze anos
Agarrar seu par
Também sair dançando
Satisfeita e dizendo
"Meu amor, ai como é gostoso o pisa no fulô"
Pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô
Não maltrate o meu amor
Pisa na fulô, pisa, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô
Não maltrate o meu amor
Pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô
Não maltrate o meu amor
Pisa na fulô, pisa, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô
Não maltrate o meu amor
Tenho pena de quem chora
De quem chora tenho dó
Quando o choro de quem chora
Não é choro, é chororô
Tenho pena de quem chora
De quem chora tenho dó
Quando o choro de quem chora
Não é choro, é chororô
Quando uma pessoa chora seu choro
Baixinho
De lágrima a correr pelo cantinho de olhar
Não se pode duvidar da razão daquela dor
Isso pode atrapalhar
Sentindo seja o que for
No meu roçado
Eu trabalhava todo dia
Mas no meu rancho
Eu tinha tudo o que queria
Lá se dançava quase toda quinta-feira
Sanfona não faltava
E tome xote a noite inteira
O xote é bom
De se dançar
A gente gruda
Na cabloca sem soltar
Um passo lá
Um outro cá
Enquanto o fole tá tocando
'Tá gemendo, 'tá chorando
'Tá fungando, reclamando sem parar
Lá no meu pé de serra
Deixei ficar meu coração
Ai que saudades tenho
Eu vou voltar pro meu sertão
No meu roçado
Eu trabalhava todo dia
Mas no meu rancho
Eu tinha tudo o que queria
Lá se dançava quase toda quinta-feira
Sanfona não faltava
E tome xote a noite inteira
O xote é bom
De se dançar
A gente gruda
Na cabloca sem soltar
Um passo lá
Um outro cá
Enquanto o fole tá tocando
'Tá gemendo, 'tá chorando
'Tá fungando, reclamando sem parar
The lyrics to Elba Ramalho's song "Pés De Milho" depict a joyful celebration of traditional Brazilian folk music and dance, particularly the "pisa na fulô" rhythm. The repetitive chorus, "pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô, pisa na fulô, não maltrate o meu amor" can be translated as "step on the flower, step on the flower, step on the flower, don't mistreat my love." This serves as a plea to the dancers to enjoy the music and the dance without causing harm or pain to their loved ones.
In the verses, Ramalho reminisces about a specific occasion when she went dancing in Pedreira and became captivated by the lively atmosphere. She mentions Zé Caxangá as the musician playing the "pisa na fulô" rhythm, emphasizing its importance in the experience. Ramalho also observes a young girl, no older than twelve, enthusiastically dancing and expressing her enjoyment of the dance, exclaiming how delightful it is to "step on the flower." This anecdote adds to the carefree and joyful atmosphere of the song.
As the song progresses, Ramalho refers to the nuances of crying and the different emotions it can convey. She expresses empathy for those who cry gently and their hidden pain, contrasting it with the intense crying that seems to be on the verge of a breakdown. Ramalho suggests that in such cases, it is better to help the person find solace amidst their tears and find their place amidst the "chororô," the intense crying and emotional turmoil.
Overall, "Pés De Milho" is a celebration of traditional Brazilian folk music and dance, promoting a joyful and caring atmosphere where love and enjoyment are cherished. Ramalho's lyrics convey the importance of preserving and respecting traditional cultural practices.
