Friend of Ours
Elbow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Before leaving get to the bar
No one 'round here makes you pay
Never very good at goodbyes
So gentle shoulder charge, love you, mate
Love you, mate

Salford skyline gloom
Always you could fly 'round any corner
But until you do

Love you, mate

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elbow's song Friend Of Ours seems to be a tribute to a friend who is leaving, possibly moving away or passing away. The opening lines hint that they are at a bar and the friend is making their last goodbyes before leaving. The second line “No one 'round here makes you pay” suggests that the friend has been well-liked by everyone and people don't mind paying for his drinks or food. The third line “Never very good at goodbyes” implies that the friend is struggling to come to terms with leaving, but still manages to make an effort. The last line “So gentle shoulder charge, love you, mate/ Love you, mate” is perhaps the most poignant of all, as it encapsulates the friendship between the two individuals.

The lyrics then mention the Salford skyline gloom, which is a reference to the town in Greater Manchester, UK, where the band is from. The next line, “Always you could fly 'round any corner” could suggest that the friend is adventurous and always up for new challenges. The last line, “But until you do, love you, mate” implies that the singer is wishing their friend well in their future endeavors, but also acknowledging that they will be missed.

Agree, I can listen to this song multiple times in a row and never tire of its perfection, the crescendo, the sadness, the love

The 6 seconds of silence between when he stops singing and the applause say more than a thousand words could ever say. Simply beautiful.

Definitely the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard. Bryan Glancy must have been very special indeed to have something so perfect written in his honour.

I get goosebumps every time the strings come in....

Hello, Frankiee88 :) The whole album is, to my ears, not only innovative...in structure, and in lyrical meter, it's well worthy of the title, "Classic Album" Whether it's listening to the original studio version, or with orchestration, and choir I'm a huge fan of the Beatles....but credit where & when it's due. It's usually a testament of how good the music is, when you hear it being used on film/movie scores, and by the BBC. This has been the case with this album.

Jake Walsh

One of the most profoundly beautiful ballads ever written

No bands except Elbow could pull so much emotion out of me with just one song. Guy is most likely one of the greatest songwriters around and will hopefully be remembered for a long time!

I find Elbows music intensively emotional, sometimes I find it hard to hold back my tears, especially with the track "Friend of ours"... That expression "Love you mate" it just gets me every time. I think that this band and its style of music has something unique and so very special, I love them so much, its hard to put your finger on, but if you are a fan then you'll know what I mean, its the way they make you feel, yes a massive feeling mode!
