The Fix
Elbow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All of the things that I believe
Are going down in flames now
All of the things that I believe
Are going down in flames now
You ask why and I don't think about it
It being us and us no longer a thing
I try and try I just can't understand it
Feeling love's inevitable sting
You've got the right to hurt right now
You've got the right to hate me
You say you're better off now
You say you're better off
I've got to figure myself out
I've got to try and fix me
You say you're better off now
Just go ahead and sign that lease
And leave me forever
All of you and my old friends
They're throwing me in flames now
You ask why and I don't think about it
It being us and us no longer a thing
I try and try I just can't understand it
Feeling love's inevitable sting
You've got the right to hurt right now
You've got the right to hate me
You say you're better off now
You say you're better off
I've got to figure myself out
I've got to try and fix me
You say you're better off now
You're such a good friend
That's why I have to break your heart
Take my love and take my life
All my friends with no goodbyes
Take my love and make me cry
All my friends with no goodbyes
Take my love and make me die

All my friends with no goodbyes
Goodbye

Overall Meaning

Elbow's song The Fix is a commentary on the corrupt nature of the horse racing industry. The central theme of the song is that the outcome of races is predetermined, and that those in control of the industry use it to their advantage to make money. The lyrics describe a group of people who are involved in fixing horse races, who are excited to see the results of their handiwork.

The song features several metaphors for the manipulation that takes place behind the scenes in horse racing. The "loaded saddles" and "mickeys" refer to the practice of drugging horses to help them win. The line "we're swapping the turf for the sand and the surf and the sin" implies that those involved in fixing races are willing to take risks and break the rules in order to achieve their goals.

The final verse of the song hints at the consequences of getting caught. The Donahue sisters, who are mentioned earlier in the song, will meet the singer in France, where they will celebrate their victory. The use of the phrase "it ain't left to chance that we win" suggests that the characters believe they will win, but the implication is that they have cheated and have not earned their victory. The song ends with the suggestion that there will be repercussions for their actions, as they will drink and dance "til the end of their days."

@jamessteven711

Can't believe they blocked the whole concert videos... I used to love watching it all the way through

@art_jilles_oom9199

and they removed one day like this, that makes me so sad...

@petertr2000

Just realised this - annoying

@nigeljohnson4880

Why did they do that!? It's an outstanding concert that I used to love to watch. A glass of red or whatever's your tipple, something to eat; life is so simple. Good music, alfresco, family and friends. Is all that really matters to us all in the end.

@ayatollahrocknrolla

"too many times we've been postally pipped" I love that line

@progrock21

Part of what probably is the best Album of all time, a clever song with great hooks.

The choir always look like they are having the best time of their live's. I imagine, it's the first time they've heard them, and they are just joining in. One of the best live displays that I've seen. Red wine (any alcohol), crusty bread and mussels. A great evening.

@eDunaway07

I don't know how can you say that, i think it is a masterpiece... especially live.

@lennono1980
