Embers
Elder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shakes up my trust
Snakes of my love
Thought of our situation
More I ford the space between us
Flood extends the static leaves
Classic case of misdirection

Rebel in your head and soul
Strength in your arms to hold
Can you feel the heart of gold is letting go?

Can't stand the swing
Are you out or are you in?
Soon as I feel the warmth towards me
Fire dies, the embers lowing

Battle in the pounds and notes
Better for the dons and pros
Do you see those dancers throw
They're saying no
Rebel in your head and soul
Strength in your arms to hold
Can you feel the heart of gold is letting go?

Hold on
The pendulum that's had me swaying too long
Not out of sight, out of mind
Your heart's gone
Can't dance in flame
Glow and faded
Do me wrong
Too wrong, I'm over
Hold on
I fantasized and you idolized it
Well maybe too long
Your Heart's gone

This light of ours is always shaded
Been holding on too long

Overall Meaning

The Elder's song Embers is a lyrical masterpiece that explores the themes of trust, love, and separation. The song opens with the line "Shakes up my trust, snakes of my love" which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer's trust has been shaken by the deceit of their loved one, and they are left to navigate the space between them. The lyrics "thought of our situation, more I ford the space between us" convey the turmoil in the singer's mind as they contemplate their relationship.

The imagery of "flood extends the static leaves, classic case of misdirection" is a metaphor for the overwhelming emotions and confusion that often accompany heartbreak. The chorus of the song is where the singer questions their loved one's commitment, asking "can you feel the heart of gold is letting go?" Despite the singer's attempts to hold on, they realize that they cannot force someone to love them. The lyrics "can't stand the swing, are you out or are you in, soon as I feel the warmth towards me, fire dies, the embers lowing" highlight the conflicting emotions that come with an on-off relationship, leaving the singer feeling used and powerless.

The last verse of the song portrays the singer pondering their options as they consider whether to hold on or let go. The line "I fantasized and you idolized it, well, maybe too long, your heart's gone" is a heartbreaking realization that the love between the two has faded. The reflective tone of the song is a bittersweet reminder of how time can slowly wear out the bonds of love despite one's best efforts.

Let’s sing along! Lyrics:

Eyes face toward the sun
Mounting the empyrean
Everything is all that will remain
Fate is just a word
Striking straight into the nerve
We all cast a shadow of the pain

What is it you want?
Consuming every thought
Consuming all you are
Piercing right into the core
A fallen star to deify
Glowing in the morning light of all demise
Bowing softly toward the end

Staring at the sun hanging in air
Wait for it to fall
Seeing with the eyes of an animal
Backed against the wall
Carrying the voiceless in a hope
And a hope within a sound
Burning down to ash to disappear
Without a trace upon the ground

Staring at the sun hanging in air
Wait for it to fall
Seeing with the eyes of an animal
Backed against the wall
Carrying the voiceless in a hope
And a hope within a sound
Burning down to ash to disappear
Without a trace upon the ground

Best band of the 2010s is swinging hard coming into the 20s!

2022 and I'm still hoping for a live video of this song. This song got me through the roller coaster of emotions at the start of the pandemic. This literally was the only song I listened to for months. Lol. It makes you feel grounded, and feel ok, while completely being aware of the bad things in life.

For people who are complaining about the entire vocal thing, sound change, etc, elder has always been changing their style. Their first album was much more metal than progressive, then it changed. Bands undergo change over time, it can't be helped. If it's the same sound for 5 albums it will get old. New music and a new style to express new times. We grow with the music. Learn to enjoy what's here while it is still.

@GPR100

Amen. It kills me when people want to hear bands simply rinse & repeat. I love Elder, and I've thoroughly enjoyed hearing them evolve - this is the case with a lot of my favorite bands. I think anyone who plays music or has truly eclectic taste can appreciate how much the creative process is a living, breathing thing. Just like most people don't want to listen to a single band, album, or song on repeat - artists don't want to create the same piece over and over. I'm really excited to hear Omens in its entirety, and even more excited to see them in Denver. Kudos on continually exploring new sounds, guys...it's exciting & it's why I keep coming back for more.

@@GPR100 And sometimes I'm disappointed. And the first records are still fucking amazing nonetheless! Music is awesome, even more so in 2020 when EVERYTHING is available all the time.

@unit4512

@Evan Berretta unfortunately this is true

@limaniner34

I don't mind the change of sound, it was pretty obvious they were going for an even more proggier style, I just find that the song kinda lacks

@drew25kra

Amen to all this.
