What side are you on?
Sure you're conceiving love?
We are born to wage wars!
Check it out from your high throne
Rabid dogs sinking teeth into skin
Hear the screams getting closer
[Chorus]
What's the color of the earth tomorrow?
We'll all be acting like avengers
Thank you god for our planet
Tell us why some people are dark and some bright
Sure you meant just one community?
This difference is spinning the world against its own run
[Chorus]
Disagreeing words sound so hollow
(No one wants to take the blame)
What's the color of the race to follow?
By extreme prejudice
What color are you God?
What side are you on?
[Chorus]
Disagreeing words sound so hollow
(no one wants to take the blame)
What's the color of the race to follow?
The lyrics of Eldritch's song "Colors" express a set of profound observations and questions about humanity's behavior towards each other. The song appears to confront the listener with an accusatory tone, questioning whether they, too, have ever judged people on their external appearance. The lyrics are forceful, asking God what side he/she is on, and what color he/she represents. This question is followed by another striking and provoking line that asks if God really intended only one community for all, given that there exist dark and bright people.
The use of the metaphor of color infuses almost every line of the song, explicating the different ways in which humans perceive individuals and groups based solely on their external appearance. Imagery such as rabid dogs sinking teeth into skin, xenophobia, and the color of the earth tomorrow that we will all be acting as avengers, further highlights the despair and anguish that the songwriter feels towards the world's present condition.
Overall, "Colors" acts as a somber reflection of how humanity's obsession with external appearances has quelled our ability to perceive people as they are, instead of blindly judging them for their color or ethnicity. The song advocates creating a society that is free from prejudice and unfairness.
