Teenage Shutdown
Electric Frankenstein Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
People touch and people stare/ you tell the world goodbye
This is an ecstatic scene/ cant get enough of it
Legal system rnakes you scream/ you never try to fit
Violence just for violence's sake/ but do you really care
Violence was your first mistake/ and will you ever dare
People come and people go/ you gotta make it stick
No one ever really knows/ the system makes you sick
Teenage Shutdown. One big let down
Teenage Shutdown. One big let down
People on the run around/ ain't got a fucking clue
Never see me on the ground/I don't get through to you
Promises I never keep/ you know it's no surprise
Now I'm in it far too deep/ and you just hide your eyes
Everybody gives it up/ you dont know how to stop
You never get another shot/ and I'm the one on top
People learning how to cry/ it's just another fad
People learning how to die/ and that's what makes me mad
Teenage Shutdown. One big let down
Teenage Shutdown. One big let down
So now you lake another lesson/ but will you ever learn?
Now I've got another weapon/I leave you here to burn
Teenage is what teenage does/ you don't know what to do
Teenage aint what teenage was/ I'm coming after you
Try to tell me what to do/ But I don't hear at all
The system's falling down on you/you gotta take the fall
People get a little close/ that's when I run and hide
It's life that l depend on most/ It's just to save my pride
Teenage Shutdown. One big let down
Teenage Shutdown. One big let down
The lyrics to Electric Frankenstein's song "Teenage Shutdown" are a commentary on the pressures and struggles faced by teenagers in a society that doesn't seem to care about them. The first two lines of the opening verses, "Pressure here and pressure there/ you tell another lie," suggest that teenagers are constantly under pressure, whether from their peers, adults, or even themselves, to be something they're not, to fit in or be accepted. The reference to telling another lie suggests that this pressure is so intense that it's hard to be authentic and true to oneself.
The next two lines, "People touch and people stare/ you tell the world goodbye," suggest that teenagers are constantly scrutinized by others, both physically and emotionally, and that this can be overwhelming. The line "Violence just for violence's sake/ but do you really care" suggests that some teenagers turn to violence as a means of expressing their frustration, but they may not even understand the root cause of their anger.
The chorus, "Teenage Shutdown. One big letdown," reinforces the idea that the teenage experience is fraught with disappointment and disillusionment. The verses continue to explore this theme, with lines like "People on the run around/ ain't got a fucking clue" and "Promises I never keep/ you know it's no surprise" suggesting that teenagers are often lost and unsure of themselves.
Overall, the song paints a dire picture of teenage life, but it also hints at the possibility of rebellion and empowerment, as seen in lines like "Now I've got another weapon/I leave you here to burn" and "Teenage aint what teenage was/ I'm coming after you." It's a call to action for teenagers to take control of their lives and resist the pressures of an uncaring society.
