Under the Gun
Electric Guest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Damon A. born in Santa Fe
To a lovely girl who knew nothing of the world
He said, "Baby boy, go for the fame, go for the fame"
He said, "I don't know, let me explain"

All his life, it was never right
Still he had his dream, made it work out in-between
Hearing "baby boy, go for the fame, go for the fame"
But they shut him down

So alone, guess I gotta find a home
(Were we born to be...)
So alone, guess I gotta find a home
(Were we born to be alone?)

Maya Mi hated Tennessee, so she packed her bag
Halfway gone she called her dad
He said, "Baby girl, if you want free, you won't see me"
He said, "Ok, and just let me be"

Got some work, called the bosses "sir"
But although she tried, something's sick inside
Hearing, "Baby girl, if you want free, you won't see me"
And they shot her down

So alone, guess I gotta find a home
(Were we born to be...)
So alone, guess I gotta find a home
(Were we born to be alone?)

No, sorry, everybody wants their way
Everybody wants their way in the Promise Land
So sorry, everybody has to wait
Everybody has to wait in the Promise Land

It's been a long time, I need to go
Maybe I'll hit the road

What I'm trying to find, I don't even know
Maybe I'll hit the road

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Electric Guest's Under the Gun tell the stories of two individuals - Damon A. and Maya Mi - who are on a quest for success and freedom respectively. Damon was born in Santa Fe to a naive girl who was unaware of the world and encouraged her son to pursue fame. Despite his efforts, Damon faced many obstacles that impeded his progress. He was advised to go for the fame but was eventually shut down. Maya, on the other hand, disliked Tennessee and decided to leave for freedom. She found work but could not blend in, and when she realized that freedom would come at a heavy cost, they shot her down.

The song explores the theme of pursuing one's desires and the resistance that often comes with it. Both Damon and Maya wanted something different, and they were willing to go a long way to achieve it. However, they found out that the journey to success and freedom could be a daunting one, and sometimes they have to be alone in their quest. The chorus "So alone, guess I gotta find a home, Were we born to be alone?" exemplifies the loneliness that comes with the pursuit of dreams.

Overall, Under the Gun is a poignant song that highlights the difficulties that people face in trying to achieve their dreams. It explores the cost of individualism and the resistance to change in society. The song's lyrics are a testament to the adage that "nothing good comes easy" and that sometimes we have to be alone in our pursuit to achieve greatness.

Seriously blew my mind that this wasn't the most popular song on the album. This one has to be the most catchy.

zhx:

@Keegan Young This Head I Hold is the catchiest for me xD

zhx:

It sounds like an Gorillaz Copy :v
And it's too repetitive

It's great! But I can see how it could get some people out of the album

So many memories of this year have this album playing in the background. I LOVE IT. I'm kind of obsessed, lol!

eyescandeceive

this is my favorite song on the album, and the reason I purchased the download. This Head I Hold is brilliant, but Under the Gun is still my favorite. I saw them on Boston in October and they opened the set with this. Fantastic!
