Big Wheels
Electric Light Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been thinking it over
So many times, they say you got it made
They never understand
The answer lies within your soul
'Cause no one know which side
The coin will fall

Big wheels turning
Baby, I know
(No, not at all) big wheels turning
Baby, I know (no, not at all)
Big wheels turning, turning

Save it for a rainy day
For when the cold wind blows
To see how they run
I thought they'd know
I tried my best, all I could do
But somehow it was not enough for you

Big wheels turning
Baby, I know
(No, not at all) big wheels turning
(No, no, no) baby, I know
(No, no, no) big wheels turning, turning
Turning, turning, turning

I remember the dead of night
A lonely light that shines upon the window
I see it all so clear
The tenderness, the silent tears

Out here in the pouring rain
Through cold dark waiting days
I see you standing there
I see the big wheels turning
Never-ending, on and on they go

Oh, I think I'm going home
I think I'm gonna have to start again
It's rather sad
Because I've looked around, can't seem to find
Whatever's always rolling through my mind

Big wheels turning
Baby, I know (through my mind)
Big wheels turning
Baby, I know
Big wheels turning, turning
Turning, turning, turning

I remember the dead of night
A lonely light that shines upon the window
Oh, I see it all so clear
The tenderness, the silent tears

Out here in the pouring rain
Through cold dark waiting days
I see you standing there
I see the big wheels turning
Never-ending, on and on they go

Overall Meaning

The song "Big Wheels" by Electric Light Orchestra is a slow, melancholic ballad about the various challenges that life throws at you, and the importance of self-reflection and introspection in overcoming these challenges. The lyrics touch on the idea that success does not necessarily equate to happiness, and that often the answer to one's problems lies within themselves. The refrain of "big wheels turning" serves as a reminder that life moves on and continues to turn, regardless of the obstacles and setbacks that we face.

The verse "save it for a rainy day, for when the cold wind blows" suggests that the singer is experiencing a difficult time in their life, and is holding back a reserve of emotional strength to carry them through these tough times. They acknowledge that they have done all that they can, but it was not enough for someone else, possibly a romantic partner who has left them feeling alone and disappointed. The image of the "lonely light that shines upon the window" in the dead of night conveys a sense of isolation, longing and despair.

Overall, "Big Wheels" is a poignant reflection on the struggles of life, but also a call to persevere and find the courage to start anew. The song encourages the listener to take a step back from the chaos of the world and look inward, to find the inner strength and resilience needed to keep moving forward, even when the road ahead seems long and uncertain.

I first heard this album when I was 19. I'm 65 this year and it still gives me goosebumps.
This, to me, is a modern day symphony with lyrics. Up there with all the great classical works.
My big wheels keep on turning thankfully to enjoy this great album.

Fun For Kids

I totally agree.

Nyarome Neko

Right behind you. I think this song is a kind of continuation of / answer to shangri-la ("my shangri-la has come and gone, faded like the Beatles in Hey Jude...")

SolarWinds -

I didn't hear this album until I was in my 50's, way way way after the disco era of which it was born. I fell in love with it the first time I heard. What can I say, I live under a rock guys!!! LOL

Tony Jones

🎯🎯🎯🎯 I think this was THE first rock album I ever bought! It’s definitely the first that I ever played over and over again. Magical. Every song.

Sad to think music of this quality will probably never happen again, cant think of any of the present musical fraternity that could come up with and produce stuff like this

Fun For Kids

Today's music is rubbish apart from somebody called Ren. Hi Ren is a masterpiece.

Crispy Crisps

Patrick Ellis

There is much beauty to be found if you know where to look. The world is full of amazing people whose talent hasn't been discovered yet.
