Rockaria!
Electric Light Orchestra Lyrics
Just got back from the downtown palais
Where the music was so sweet
Knocked me right back in the alley
I'm ready, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm ready
Oh, oh, oh, I'm ready and I'm really gonna rock tonight
Sweet little lady sings like a songbird
And she sings the opera like you ain't never heard
But she ain't ready
No, no, no, she ain't ready
And she ain't gonna rock and roll
She's sweet on Wagner
I think she'd die for Beethoven
She loves the way Puccini lays down a tune
And Verdi's always creeping from her room
Come on, I'll show you how to sing the blues
Now baby, come on over you got nothin' to lose
Are you ready, hey, hey, hey are you ready?
Ooh, ooh, ooh, are you ready?
I wanna show you how to rock and roll
Now listen here baby she said to me
"Just meet me at the opera house at a quarter to three
'Cause I'm ready, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm ready
Ooh, ooh, ooh, I'm ready
I'm gonna show you how to sing the blues"
She's sweet on Wagner
I think she'd die for Beethoven
She loves the way Puccini lays down a tune
And Verdi's always creeping from her room
Far, far away the music is playing
Well, we were reelin' and a rockin' all through the night
Yeah, we were rockin' at the opera house until the break of light
And the orchestra were playin' all Chuck Berry's greatest tunes
And the singers in the chorus all got off on singing blues
And as the night grew older everybody was as one
The people on the streets came runnin' in to join in song
Just to hear the opera singer singin' rock and roll so pure
I thought I saw the mayor there but I wasn't really sure, but it's alright

The novel fusion of orchestral and rock sounds that Jeff Lynne wove together in his hits with Electric Light Orchestra reached a zenith with "Rockaria," a stunning tune that combined symphonic swells, operatic vocals, 50's styled guitar riffs and a Beatles-esque melody into one delirious pop song. The story-song lyrics of "Rockaria" offer a fanciful, witty scenario in which a hardcore rock and roller falls in love with a lovely lass who "sings the opera like you ain’t never heard" and decides to teach her how to rock and roll. The story-song lyrics of "Rockaria" offer a fanciful, witty scenario in which a hardcore rock and roller falls in love with a lovely lass who "sings the opera like you ain’t never heard" and decides to teach her how to rock and roll. Lynne plays on the contrast between the differences in their respective worlds, especially in an inspired line where he describes the diva’s favorites in pop-fan terminology: "She’s sweet on Wagner/I think she’d die for Beethoven/She loves the way Puccini lays down a tune/And Verdi’s always creepin’ from her room." The music also plays up the contrast between its protagonists by alternating swaggering rock-styled verse melodies with an ethereal, wordless aria bridge before joining the two on the finale. Electric Light Orchestra’s recording of "Rockaria" could very well be the most impressive of the group’s recordings thanks to a driving arrangement that seamlessly fuses the mock-aria sections with blasts of hard rock anchored by Lynne’s wailing guitar and Bev Bevan’s stomping drumwork. When these two section blend together for the finale, supported by pulsating strings and a choir, the effect is truly breathtaking. The novelty of the sound and the imagination poured into "Rockaria" should have made the song a hit in America but it failed to achieve the same success of the other singles from A New World Record in the U.S. However, it did quite well elsewhere in the world, including a top-ten charting in the U.K. "Rockaria" remains one of the biggest favorites among Electric Light Orchestra and is rightly considered to be one of Jeff Lynne’s finest achievements on record.

ROCKARIA! LYRICS
Weit, oops!
Weit, weit in die Ferne
Man hört, man hört die Musik
Just got back from the downtown Palais
Where the music was so sweet
It knocked me right back in the alley
I'm ready, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm ready
Woah, woah, woah, I'm ready
And I'm really gonna rock tonight

And she sings the opera like you ain't never heard
But she ain't ready
No, no, no, she ain't ready
No, no, no, she ain't ready
And she ain't gonna rock and roll
[Chorus]
She's sweet on Wagner
I think she'd die for Beethoven
She loves the way Puccini lays down a tune
And Verdi's always creeping from her room
Weit, weit in die Ferne
Man hört, man hört die Musik
Come on I'll show you how to sing the blues
Now baby, come on over you got nothing to lose
Are you ready, hey, hey, hey are you ready?
Ooh, ooh, ooh, are you ready?
I want to show you how to rock and roll

Just, meet me at the opera house at a quarter to three
'Cause I'm ready, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm ready
Woo, hoo, hoo, I'm ready

God, these lyrics are just genius.

No one meshed opera, classical and rock the way ELO did on this song. And yes, i'm including Queen!
Tony Troiani
@Spit Dragon 💚 I have to be honest. This was a while ago and for a moment I couldn't work out what you were talking about. I'm very sorry. Anyway ELO are truly amazing to me, more so than Queen, however Queen are still truly amazing, in particular Freddie Mercury in terms of vocals and charisma was way above Jeff Lynne, however I much prefer the more humble persona that Jeff Lynne portrays Musicaly, to me Jeff lynne was way above Freddie Mercury. He is a multi instrumentalist and has composed most of his music and written most of his own songs and for other bands. 🍻
Spit Dragon 💚
@Tony Troiani be sorry all you want, that song is not better than this one.
It's certainly more updated, overproduced, near Freddy's end of his life, has nothing to do with the actual band.
Spit Dragon 💚
@G H Incorrect. If you think that somehow you are mentally above these people in terms of understanding music, not me! Queen Falls very short. Not even getting into Freddie Mercury or any of that other nonsense, song by song? Album by album? ELO has more to it, more melodic variations, more pure talent, more creativity and its lyrics than Queen has ever had across-the-board. To deny this is only showing your favoritism or your dislike for things that sounds slightly like the Beatles. I will admit that, however? I will not say that they are a Beatles sound alike nor belittle what electric light has done for music as a whole to this day. It is a shame + a sin that Queen and Freddie Mercury are held at a higher regard than Jeff Lynne and this amazing music.
To compare them to begin with was the original mess up, we're talking something that was inspired by early day Punk and rock, as mentioned with Led Zeppelin etc. ELO is on a whole different branch of the tree and for anyone to just double down on saying blank is better than blank without going into any of these other avenues? Is a disservice to all of the Bands mentioned and their music.
ELO is jukebox jams, music of the future, classical mixed with fantastical
Queen is just jock three-chord jingles for early gays
Tony Troiani
I'm am very sorry as brilliant as this is Freddie Mercury of Queen did some meshing, Barcelona with
Montserrat Caballe, which is definitely worth a listen, enjoy😁

I love this Band since my 13th age. Now i'm 59 years old.

I love since my 12th age .Almost 60!

This song is so natural. They leave the "oops" in because it's legitimate rock n roll.
Always love starting my day with this jam.
