The oblivion and ecstasy of crushing doom and high grade marijuana, a sonic aural trip far, far away from this world, where only cyclopean walls of crackling vintage tube amps in full overdrive and primal ritualistic beats can wash away all the filth and drudgery of everyday life. Their music can be described as Doom Metal. Their sound is a crushing behemoth of funeral march psychedelia. Violent, bleak and ritualistic.
Born in Dorset, England in 1993, in a quiet country town, initially they were the product of frustration, unemployment and excessive drug abuse. But through hallucinogenic experimentation and occult sciences they realized their true potential. A celebration of outre low brow art like Weird Tales, 70's horror and B-movies, head shop art, drug comix, italian pornohorror comics, Crepax, Lovecraft, Howard etc. etc...coupled with a morbid fascination in cults, witchcraft, freemasonry, biker culture, mysticism and ancient occult sciences and how these dark arts can be applied to music.
Their history actually starts in 1988 when Justin Oborn created a doom-influenced death metal band called Lord of Putrefaction. The above mentioned band released only several demos but it showed the unique talent of Justin Oborn in the art of creating heavy slow riffs. In 1992 Lord of Putrefaction disbanded and Justin Oborn started another band called Thy Grief Eternal which moved more towards the doom metal genre though still it had significant death metal influence. The music was more refined and mature. Then in 1993 Thy Grief Eternal was disbanded and the band Eternal was crated. This band played pure stoner doom though the quality can't even come close to the next and the last band in this history, Electric Wizard. Mark Greening left Ramesses to re-join the band in late 2012.

Incense for the Damned
Electric Wizard Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But your world seems worse to me
I don't give a fuck about anyone
Or your society. I just need
Incense for the Damned
Our lives are condemned
Incense for the Damned
Marijuana burns inside my crypt
High up here I don't need to take your shit
You people try to bring us down
But soon you'll all be chocking on
Incense for the Damned
I wanna get high before I die
I wanna get high before I die, I wanna die....
Like Caligula is how I would treat this world if it were mine...
But this world has no love for me
A useless freak, turn your back to society....
We wanna get high before we die
We wanna get high before we die
We wanna die...I wanna die
The lyrics to Electric Wizard's song "Incense for the Damned" are about an individual's rejection of society and the mainstream world. The singer does not care for others' opinions on drugs and instead uses them to cope with life. They see society as worse than drugs and rejects it entirely. The repeated phrase "incense for the damned" suggests that the use of drugs is a way for those that feel rejected by society to cope with their existence. The imagery of marijuana burning inside a crypt refers to the singer's personal hidden space, away from the prying eyes of society. The lyrics suggest that the singer would prefer a hedonistic lifestyle, like Caligula, given the chance.
The final lines state their desire to get high before they die and their feeling of uselessness to society. The repetition of "we wanna die" adds a sense of nihilism to the lyrics. The song could be seen as a statement on modern society's attitudes towards drugs and addiction, presenting an alternative perspective on why people might turn to drugs in the first place. The repeated phrase "our lives are condemned" encapsulates the sense of hopelessness pervading the lyrics.

That riff at 1:12 is glorious. They played this live when I saw them in Brooklyn and it was unbelievable. Easily one of the most face melting shows Iβve ever seen! Everyone should see these guys at least once

Electric Wizard is arguably the best rock band in the universe. When I was young, I liked fast bands and didn't understand slow rock, but now I like slow rock much more.γI don't understand why I've lived without listening to the Electric Wizard.
