Don't Cry For Me Argentina

When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions
They are not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Don't cry for me Argentina
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you.
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true
The song “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” is from the musical Evita, which focuses on the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón. In the song, Eva tells the Argentine people not to cry for her or feel sorrow about her life and struggles.
She begins the song by acknowledging that it won’t be easy to explain her feelings to the people that once knew her. She tells them that she still needs their love despite her past mistakes. Eva then admits that she had to change her ways and seek freedom, although nothing impressed her. She then reassures the people of Argentina that she never really left them, and that all her wild days and mad existence were for them. Eva then explains that she never hoped for fame or fortune as they promised illusions but that the answer was loving and being loved.
The song is deeply emotional and represents a turning point in the life of Eva Perón. Her character in the musical is a representation of the hopes and dreams of the Argentine people, and the song perfectly portrays this. The lyrics remind us that even when we stray from our path, love and being loved is what ultimately gives us purpose and fulfillment.

Mas no te alejes, te necesito
Jamás poderes ambicioné
Mentiras dijeron de mí
Mi lugar vuestro es, por vosotros luché
Yo sólo quiero sentiros muy cerca, poder intentar
Abrir mi ventana y saber
Que nunca me vais a olvidar
No llores por mí Argentina ...
No llores por mí Argentina
Mi alma está contigo
Mi vida entera te la dedico
Mas no te alejes, te necesito
Qué mas podré decir
Para convenceros de mi verdad
Si aún queréis dudar, mirad mis ojos ved
Cómo lloran de amor
