Chanting
Elend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"We, the host of Seraphim, the armies of bright,
We do not rue the dire event
That, with sad overthrow and foul defeat, hath lost us Heaven.
Ever to do ill will be our sole delight,
Reassembling our afflicted powers
On the burning Lake of liquid fire.
Hail horrours! Hail infernal World!
Here at last we shall be free!
Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven!"

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Elend's song "Chanting" reference the Christian tradition of the Seraphim, an order of angels often associated with divine light and holiness. The lyrics, however, cast these angels in a different light, depicting them as an army that has lost Heaven due to a "dire event." The following lines suggest that this defeat does not trouble them - in fact, they take pleasure in doing evil and reassembling their powers in the burning Lake of liquid fire. The final lines express their joy in being in Hell, where they can reign freely rather than serve in Heaven.

The overall tone of the song is one of rebellion and triumph in darkness. The use of Christian imagery and language gives the lyrics an ominous weight and suggests a certain moral ambiguity - are these "host of Seraphim" truly evil, or are they merely rebelling against an oppressive order? The lyrics are set to a choral arrangement that only heightens their sense of grandeur and drama, evoking a sense of a dark ritual or ceremony.
