Into Bottomless Perdition
Elend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He of the first, if not the first archangel,
Great in power, favour and preeminence,
He resolv'd with all his legions to dislodge
And leave unworshipt the Throne Supreme.
With ambitious aim they gather
On the Mountain of Congregation,
And, against the throne and monarchy of God,
Raised impious war in Heaven.
Him the Almighty Power
Hurl'd headlong flaming from the ethereal sky,
Down to bottomless perdition.
He with horrid crew,
Lay vanquished rolling in the fiery gulf,

Confounded though immortal.

Confounded though immortal.
Confounded though immortal.

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are taken from John Milton's "Paradise Lost" and describe the events of Satan's rebellion against God, as he and other fallen angels attempted to overthrow God and rule over Heaven. The lyrics specifically reference the archangel who was either the first or one of the first, who led the rebellion in an attempt to leave God's throne un-worshipped. Satan and his legions assemble on the Mountain of Congregation and declare war against God's throne, but they are ultimately defeated by God's almighty power, which casts them down from the sky into an abyss known as "bottomless perdition."

The repetition of "confounded though immortal" at the end of the lyrics highlights the irony of Satan's situation. Though he and the other fallen angels are immortal beings, they are ultimately defeated and cast down, leaving them in a state of eternal condemnation and shame.
