Don't Say No
Eleni Mandell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can you tell me how it’s been?
Living, breathing at the same time and then
I see your reflection in the glass as you leave
Every airplane landing carries you here.
Don’t say no, darling, don’t say no.

Will you tell me what you’ve seen?
Cars and buses filled with faces from magazines.
I feel your fingers as the wind blows through
Barely reaching out, I’m touching you.
Don’t say no, baby, don’t say no.
Don’t say no, baby, don’t say no.

I’ve been wondering since the day I was born
I found the answer in the rain, in the garden, the waves on the shore.

I’ve been coming home to stay
Have you always been just light years away?
I hear you drumming on the window pane
Some I cast the shadow spelling my name.
Don’t say no, sweetheart, don’t say no.

Don’t say no, baby, don’t say no.
Don’t say no, my darling, don’t say no.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eleni Mandell's song "Don't Say No" are an introspective look at a relationship that seems to have been on pause for some time. Mandell is addressing her lover, asking how it's been since they last spoke, and wondering if they've seen anything new or exciting. She sees her lover's reflection in the glass as they leave, and she feels a deep connection to them despite their physical distance. Mandell sings of wondering about life since the day she was born, and finding answers in the rain, in the garden, and in the waves on the shore.

The chorus of the song, "Don't say no, darling, don't say no," is repeated several times throughout the song, almost as if it's a plea to her lover not to shut her out or reject her again. Mandell sings about coming home to stay, but wonders if her lover has always been light years away from her. She hears her lover drumming on the window pane and sees the shadow spelling her name, indicating that there is still a connection between them, but it's fragile and can be easily broken. The song ends with Mandell once again pleading with her lover not to say no, using endearing terms like "sweetheart," "baby," and "darling" to convey her deep feelings for them.

I can totally relate! I work at a really busy Starbucks, so it is so difficult to actually hear the music but the crowd died down and thus I discovered this beautiful song. Also, feel free to ask the baristas for the name of the songs, we have a radio in the back that says the title/artist name of whatever is playing lol.

@farasinfarasin91

just beautiful ....
