Watermelon Ham
Elephant Kind Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh I'd rather lose my pride
Though it don't feel right
As long as we're alright
I'd rather lose my mind
Oh I'm gonna lose my mind
We've wasted all daylight
We barely made it through the night
I coulda lied to you
Oh like most do
I won't let you starve
I'll let your dreams come true
Your heart is fickle
So let me be clear
I wouldn't lie to you
To make it work
Oh Submarine
And one bed motel
We settle this tonight
The old-fashioned way
We meet in the middle
Whenever we're ready
Love over ego
We meet halfway
We meet in the middle
Whenever we're ready
Love over ego
We meet halfway
We drink Submarine
In one bed motel
We settle this tonight
The old-fashioned way
We meet in the middle
Whenever we're ready
Love over ego
We meet halfway
We meet in the middle
Whenever we're ready
Love over ego
We meet halfway
The lyrics to Elephant Kind's song "Watermelon Ham" speak of a relationship that is going through some rough patches. The line "I'd rather lose my pride/ Though it don't feel right/ As long as we're alright/ I'd rather lose my mind/ Oh I'm gonna lose my mind" suggests a willingness to put aside one's pride and ego for the sake of the relationship. The singer is willing to make sacrifices to ensure that the relationship is healthy, even if it means losing a part of themselves.
The next few lines, "I coulda lied to you/ Oh like most do/ I won't let you starve/ I'll let your dreams come true" speak to the importance of honesty in a relationship. The singer acknowledges that they could have lied to their partner like many others do, but they choose to be truthful and supportive instead. This is further emphasized in the lines "Your heart is fickle/ So let me be clear/ I wouldn't lie to you/ To make it work."
The chorus of the song repeats the lines "We meet in the middle/ Whenever we're ready/ Love over ego/ We meet halfway" to convey the idea that compromise and mutual understanding are key to making a relationship work. The final lines "We drink Submarine/ In one bed motel/ We settle this tonight/ The old-fashioned way" suggest a desire to resolve conflicts in a more intimate and personal setting.
Overall, the lyrics to "Watermelon Ham" are about the ups and downs of a relationship and the importance of honesty, compromise, and putting the relationship first. The use of metaphors and imagery add depth to the meaning behind the words.

I'd rather lose my pride
I'd rather be humble and admit fault than try to maintain an image
Oh I'd rather lose my pride
Being humble is more important than saving face
Though it don't feel right
Being humble is uncomfortable, but necessary
As long as we're alright
The relationship is more important than individual pride
I'd rather lose my mind
I am willing to go crazy over this love
Oh I'm gonna lose my mind
I am already at my breaking point
We've wasted all daylight
We've spent too long fighting and need to make up
We barely made it through the night
Our relationship was on the verge of breaking up last night
I coulda lied to you
I had the option to deceive you
Oh like most do
Many people choose to deceive to keep their partner happy
I won't let you starve
I will provide for you emotionally and physically
I'll let your dreams come true
I will support and encourage your ambitions
Your heart is fickle
You are indecisive and easily swayed
So let me be clear
I need to be honest with you
I wouldn't lie to you
I will always be truthful, even if it's difficult
To make it work
Lies will ultimately undermine our relationship
Oh Submarine
A type of drink
And one bed motel
A cheap, intimate place to stay
We settle this tonight
We need to resolve our issues now
The old-fashioned way
Through communication and compromise
We meet in the middle
Both partners need to compromise to make the relationship work
Whenever we're ready
We need to approach the situation at our own pace
Love over ego
Prioritizing the relationship over individual pride
We meet halfway
Both partners need to make equal effort to reconcile
We drink Submarine
A symbol of the reunion
In one bed motel
The two of us coming together
