Drop
Elephant Revival Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I was a big drop of water.
I was in the desert.
I was in high,
Was in high demand.
Saw you turn, saw you turn, turn away.
Water came down, hit the dry ground.
Lost all the facts, slipped through the cracks.
Spread around,
Under and down.

Down through the ground
Carry on, now beyond
Past where all the dancing rained like thunder
After laughter and music, different sounds
To where the thunder became something
Like the pulsing of the flowers
Which is something like but nothing,
Like the pulsing like the hours.
But the hour was on time because I slipped into a flower
Recalled the time to climb the line,
A honeysuckle tower.
I was water brought to lifted leaves
Of daffodils and day lillies.
Drank into the grace of trees
The aspens like the willows weep.

It hung so low
It touched below
The surface of
A still puddle.
Did I behold
Reflection told
Looking back at me
The eyes of my body.
So I jumped in
Back into my skin
And sang this song
Of where I'd been.

Once I was a big drop of water.
I spread around and became part of many living in the land.
Saw you turn when I turned, turned away.

In the still, in the still water.
And we're still water.

Overall Meaning

"Drop" is a song by Elephant Revival, an American band often described as a neo-folk, indie-inspired alternative band with a unique musical sensibility. The song is from their album "Break in the Clouds," released in 2010, and it features Bonnie Paine on vocals and musical saw, Sage Cook on electric banjo and guitar, and Dango Rose on double bass and vocals.

The lyrics of the song showcase the metaphorical journey of a big drop of water. At first, the water is in high demand because it is in the desert, where water is scarce. This drop sees someone turn and turn away, which could represent someone not appreciating or acknowledging the water's value. Ultimately, the water evaporates and 'slips' through the cracks of the dry earth, spreading around until it becomes part of something else, like a plant or a still puddle. Later on, the song takes on a spiritual, transcendental vibe, as the water carries on beyond its original context.

The lyrics address a broad range of themes, including nature, spirituality, fluidity, journey, transformation, and interconnectedness. One interpretation is that the song speaks to the idea of being one with everything, experiencing a sense of unity with all living beings and the natural world. The two final lines are particularly significant in this regard, as they suggest that we are all made of the same basic constituent elements.

In terms of the music, the instrumentation is sparse, with an emphasis on acoustic instruments like the banjo and double bass. The vocal performance is haunting and emotional, perfectly complementing the lyrical content. The song has a slow and contemplative feel, with a sound that can be described as something between folk, country, and Americana.

My taste in music is pretty broad, but above all and irrespective of genre, I tend to like artists who defy genre and description and category.

I am absolutely in fucking love with this band. Their originality is startling, as is their talent.

@gib59er56

I have a wide range of taste as well Thomas, and maybe it is because I am a musician myself, mainly guitarist but I play bass, sing and bang sticks on drum kits a bit. But I think it is a bit more of, .....if there is talent there for me to hear/feel I will lend my ear to it and see where it takes me. I am mesmerized by these people, with a wide range of musical taste and covering different genres have me quickly taking notice and jumping on board of their wagon. And the lead singer is beyond "good", she is fucking stunning vocally and overflowing with charisma!
