Brother
Eli Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You carry a ton on your shoulders
I can see that as you're walking towards me
I try to search for the right words
I can't find them, I can barely speak
Cause I said them all before, but you don't listen anymore
That I can tell
So I'll wrap my arms around you, and wish that I can free you from the spell
Is this the last time I'll see you
I can feel the fear that's coming over me
I know you think you've lost it all
I wish I could convince you, you are wrong
Cause everything is there, you just don't see it any clear
That's how it is
I know that's how you feel, but everything I'm telling you is real
Brother

I should have been there that morning
Cause I feared what could be coming but I was gone
I should have gotten you in my car
And drove us off to somewhere we could be alone
I should have held you in my arms
And told you how much you are loved by everyone (Again and again)

And I should never have let you go until I saw the light back in your eyes
Brother

Overall Meaning

In the song "Brother," the singer is expressing a deep concern for their brother who seems to be carrying a burden. The opening lines suggest that the brother is overwhelmed with responsibility as he carries a lot on his shoulders. The singer can tell that his brother is down because he can see it in his walk. The singer is at a loss as he tries to find the right words to comfort his brother but can't seem to find them. He has said them before, but his brother isn't listening anymore. The singer is aware that his brother is under a spell, perhaps a negative mental state, and wishes he could free him from it.

The singer is distressed that this could be the last time he sees his brother. Fear creeps into his mind as he thinks about it. He tries to convince his brother that he has not lost everything, but the brother is unable to see the good things around him. The singer suggests that everything his brother thinks is lost is still there, but he just can't see them clearly. The singer knows that his brother is lost, but he assures him that everything he is saying is real.

The third verse is a lamentation. The singer wishes that he could have been there for his brother during a particular incident, but he wasn't. The singer blames himself for not being there when he should have been, stating that he should have acted differently. He regrets not being able to hold his brother and tell him how much he is loved by everyone. The singer reveals that he should have never let his brother go until he saw the light back in his eyes.
