Five
Eliza Hull Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I started dreaming big when I was five
The world became my playground
I was tempted by the bigger things
I needed control
I wanted to speed up the cycle
Fight for the people below
When I was Five
I’m a star in the daylight
I’m being conserved till it is just right
I don’t want to end up burnt
Oh no!
I don’t want to end up burnt

Distractions from the sun
The next new thing is always so much sweeter
The taste rolls on my tongue
Then there is you, you, you
You’re what money can’t buy or should I trade us in?
Fly into the deep red sky, it felt so much easier at Five
Tasted so much sweeter at Five

I’m a star in the daylight
I’m being conserved till it is just right
I don’t want to end up burnt
Oh no!
I don’t want to end up burnt

I am walking away from the things that you said when you held me back

I’m a star in the daylight
I’m being conserved till it is just right
I don’t want to end up burnt

Oh no!
I don’t want to end up burnt

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eliza Hull's song Five are a mix of reflection, determination and self-awareness. The opening lines are particularly poignant as she looks back to the age of five when she began dreaming big, and the world became her playground. This sense of limitless possibility is contrasted with her desire for control and to speed up the cycle. It seems that she had a strong sense of wanting to do more and make a difference in the world. The repetition of "when I was five" throughout the song almost serves as a reminder to her younger self, and a desire to regain that sense of freedom, wonder and innocence.

The second verse delves into the concept of distractions and how the next new thing is always so much sweeter. She mentions that "there is you, you, you" which could be interpreted as a reference to relationships, or even just the idea of love or connection. This is contrasted with the monetary world which "can't buy" this sense of connection. She then speaks to the idea of wanting to fly "into the deep red sky" which could be interpreted as a metaphor for achieving her goals and dreams. There is a sense that it was easier to do this when she was younger - which is another nostalgic reference to the age of five.

The chorus is a repetition of the opening lines, however, there is a new sense of determination and confidence in her desire to not end up burnt. It seems that the idea of burning out or losing control is a very real fear for her, and one that she wants to avoid at all costs. The final line where she says she is walking away from the things that held her back could be interpreted in a number of ways - it could be specific relationships or events that she is leaving behind, or it could be a general sense of letting go of anything that has stopped her from achieving her goals and dreams.
