Her upcoming album, Brainchildren (due November 2011 on Canopy Jazz), tells stories real and imagined, outlining the similarities found in our experiences no matter where we reside. âThreeâ tells the story of a couple deciding to have a child, âBicycleâ reminds a child to enjoy his innocence while it lasts, and âMelting Snowâ describes the feeling of rebirth after tragedy. Several songs relate tales of love gained or lost, and the album is rounded out with instrumentals inspired by insomnia, tacos, and a skipping stroll in Memphis. Recorded in Brooklyn with her working band in a single day, Brainchildren features Rob Jost (Saturday Night Live, Bjork) on bass and Robert Di Pietro (Norah Jones, Josh Rouse) on drums. Special guests include Kiku Collins (Beyonce), Jon Natchez (Beirut), and Mark Erelli (Josh Ritter).
Honing her craft since the age of seven, elizabeth! has studied piano, trombone, and voice as well as arranging and composition. She played in the jazz band while studying neuroscience at Harvard, and has a Masterâs Degree in jazz from New York Cityâs Queens College, but her initial love of music came from her parents in rural Vermont. âMy dad is a musician, so I grew up listening to live jazz â going backstage, lugging gear, learning the ins and outs,â she said. âAnd my mom had great taste, playing Motown and folk music at home.â This combination of musical genres can be heard in the music elizabeth! plays today, and in the way she approaches performance: lyrical like a pop song, but with a background twist of jazz. Counting Sheila Jordan and Phil Wilson as influential teachers, elizabeth! also admits to loving Whitney Houston.
elizabeth! has performed across the United States, Canada, South America, and Europe. Notable venues include: Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Chicago Theater, Sasquatch Music Festival, Good Morning America, Late Night with Conan OâBrien, The Today Show, PBSâs Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize broadcast honoring Tina Fey, Bowery Ballroom, Jazz Standard, and Switzerlandâs Willisau Jazz Festival. She recently sang at the Yaroslavl Jazz Festival in Russia, and last year spent time teaching trombone in Quito, Ecuador. elizabeth! is an endorsing artist for Getzen 3508R Custom trombones, and a member of the all-female horn section The Sugarhorns.
Also a dynamic teacher and clinician, elizabeth! believes everyone can be musical. Using improvisation as a guiding tool, she works with students of all ages, building confidence and developing imagination. She teaches in various situations, from one-on-one performance coaching, to workshops for fifth graders on improvisation in daily life, to lecturing 800 rowdy inner city high school students. She also directs the summer Vermont Governorâs Institute on the Arts.
Following up on her 2008 release hot & silver - of which The Palo Alto Daily News said âher silky, sultry, elegant vocals enliven standardsâ â elizabeth! will tour the East and West Coast this fall in support of Brainchildren.
Bewitched
Elizabeth! Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But a fool can have her charms
I'm in love and don't I show it
Like a babe in arms
Love's the same old situation
Lately I've not slept a wink
Since this crazy situation
I'm wild again, beguiled again
A whimpering, simpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I
Couldn't sleep, wouldn't sleep
Love came and told me, shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I
I lost my heart, but what of it
She is cold I agree
She might laugh, but I love it
Although the laugh's on me
I'll sing to her, bring spring to her
And long, for the day when I'll cling to her
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I
The lyrics of "Bewitched" by Elizabeth! tell the story of a person who is hopelessly in love with someone who they know is not good for them or reciprocates their feelings. The first stanza acknowledges that the person they are in love with is a fool, but they are also bewitched by her charms. The second stanza talks about how this love has caused the singer to lose sleep and become insane. The chorus talks about how they are caught up in their love, feeling like a child again, and being utterly bewildered. The next stanza acknowledges that the person they love does not love them back and is cold, but they still love her anyway. The song concludes with the singer saying that they will continue to pursue their love even if it is hopeless.
The song is written in the classic style of a love ballad with a twist. Instead of the usual happy ending or unrequited love, this song takes a more cynical take on love. The lyrics focus on the pain of loving someone who cannot love you back, the bittersweet agony of being helpless in the face of love's power. The song perfectly captures the feeling of being "bewitched, bothered and bewildered."

This video is a bit one-sided. Liz's first husband was against her desire to begin a career of her on, a desire she'd had since a little girl. He wanted her to be a housewife. Well, that didn't go over well with Elizabeth.
Her father warned her about Young. He was an alcoholic and could be abusive. She had to get away from him. I've read that Presley had to step in on KID GALAHAD, while she was visiting the set, because of Young's temper.
As i said, this video is a bit one-sided. According to what Bill Asher told Herbie Pilato, Liz's biographer, he admitted to having a wandering eye. Asher was also married four times. I've read that he cheated on her.
Interesting how Lucille Ball and Desni Arnez's marriage had similar issues. Arnez was alcoholic and cheated on her more than once. I've seen a video on them and thought, that figures.
It's stuff like this that caused Liz to shun the Hollywood scene and press, and the press in general, for years. It's also why she tried to protect her kids from the Hollywood scene. Her daughter is a director in the business.
To wrap this up. The one thing that she and Asher did was to stay close in order to raise their kids. Her son William has said, years ago, that his parents handled the divorce in an amicable way for their children's sake. I think they kept it out of the press, as well.
Finally. I hate the tabloid press one finds at the checkout in stores. People have a voyeuristic need to know about the private lives of those in Hollywood and other public venues. I also don't like tell all books. I'm a fan of Elizabeth Montgomery's, and have been for years. So while reading about her career, one runs into stuff that is personal. A person's personal life is just that, personal. Today, with social media, some celebrities love splashing their lives all over the net. That wasn't Elizabeth Montgomery.
BTW. I can count on one hand of actors/actresses that I like or a fan of. Liz is one, because of who she was as a person, smart, funny, kind, and a big heart. She just wanted to be thought of as just regular folk.

I was born in 1960 and to this day watching a re-run of bewitched takes me back to my childhood. I love to watch the show. No other show from my childhood is as âmagicalâ to watch now as Bewitched.

@Ms Mars I remember it well. Still love many of the Monkees songs. And who can forget that unforgettable line: "Danger Will Robinson, Danger!"
Ms Mars
@Jon B I liked the Monkees and That Girl. I crushed on Mickey Dolenz (my "first love" at age 5, LOL) and I loved the mod outfits that Marlo Thomas rocked in every episode. Lost in Space was a fave too.

@Ken Tapley Original Darrin was so animated and comical, wasn't he? 2nd Darrin was a bit of a snooze. JMO. LOL.

It seems to me that Elizabeth's marriage wasn't much of a marriage since her husband had several affairs. Is it any wonder that she found someone else who she felt valued her?

@Ms Mars It never hurts to listen to other people's opinions respectfully -- and then to disagree just as respectfully. The Ashers largely kept their private lives private. They were both accomplished creative artists who brought much pleasure to many. The point of "Bewitched" is that even stay-at-home wives and moms do a lot for their husbands behind the scenes beyond cooking and cleaning and rearing children -- and that we can't separate ourselves from the persons we are.
Ms Mars
It's always easy to speculate and judge when you are not personally involved and you don't have the facts. This channel is only reporting heresay. I'm sorry that I watched the video. Shame on me for letting myself get sucked in.

@d g It wasn't about getting back at her husband, what hurt her husband/his pride was the fact she fell in love with the other man (unlike him she wasn't just sleeping around with anything that was available).
