Cook's West Virginia-born mother played guitar and mandolin and sang on local radio shows. Her father, a Georgia native, also performed country music and served jail time for running moonshine. Upon his release, he and Elizabeth's mother played in local bands together, eventually marrying. Elizabeth, born in 1972, moved to Nashville in her twenties and quickly got a publishing deal. Demos recorded between 1997 and 2000 comprised her independently released debut album, "The Blue Album", which showcased her formidable songwriting ability and featured such well-known Music City musicians as Tim Carroll, Kenny Vaughan, and Rick Schell.
She made her major label debut in 2002 with "Hey Y'All". But following a corporate re-structuring that left the album virtually abandoned and stagnant on sales, Elizabeth fought back with her 2005 independent release "This Side Of The Moon", which received positive reviews.
Her album "Balls" was released May 2007. It was been her most successful album to date, thanks to glowing press reviews and significant video play for the song "Sometimes It Takes Balls To Be A Woman."
Her 2010 album Welder features appearances by an all-star roster of guests including Dwight Yoakam, Crowell and Buddy Miller, and continued her increasing popularity becoming her highest charting album in the U.S.
Her album "Gospel Plow" was released June 2012.
Cook hosts the morning radio show "Elizabeth Cook's Apron Strings" on the Sirius XM radio station Outlaw Country on Channel 60. The show airs weekdays from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM (Eastern Time). The show format is a mix of Americana, Outlaw, and Alt Country.
In 2016, Cook released her sixth studio album Exodus of Venus.

Bad Decisions
Elizabeth Cook Lyrics

I must look wonderful to tonight
You rolled up on me with tunnel vision
But baby don't turn on the light
I should've stayed home and watched television
I should've tried not to drink
I should've kept your key out of my ignition
It was rainin' on the court steps, I had a feelin' I was slipping away
Can't remember last time I slept, but believe me
It won't be today, there's no way
I got a thing for walkin' contradictions
You feel right as rain
Never been good at taming my addictions
But I sure can stay in the game
From the hotel to the airport, I had a feelin' I was slipping a way
One day you'll find me on a seashore doing my healin',
Without hell to pay, one fine day
I wanna thank you for your attention
Considering all my crimes
I just don't take well to interventions
In light of these challenging times
It was rainin' on the court steps, I had a feelin' I was slippin away
One day you'll find me on a seashore doing my healin' without hell to pay..
Marking the end of the cold war, ready and willin', to seize the day,
I'm on my way
In the first verse, the singer speaks about their appearance and how it may give off the impression that they are prone to making bad decisions. They acknowledge that they may look attractive or appealing to someone who only sees them with tunnel vision, focusing solely on their outward appearance. However, the singer warns this person not to reveal their true self, represented by the metaphor "don't turn on the light."
In the second verse, the singer reflects on the choices they should have made differently. They express regret for not staying at home and watching television, avoiding going out and getting into trouble. They acknowledge that they should have tried not to consume alcohol excessively and should have prevented the person they're addressing from accessing their car keys. They also admit that they should have ignored other people's opinions and not cared about what others thought of them.
The third verse reveals the singer's current state of being. They mention that it was raining on the court steps, suggesting a moment of instability or vulnerability. They indicate that they cannot recall the last time they slept properly but emphasize that they will not sleep today, implying a restless or unsettled mindset.
The fourth and final verse delves into the singer's personality. They describe themselves as someone attracted to contradictions, someone who simultaneously appreciates and struggles with the person they are with. The singer acknowledges that they may not be successful at overcoming their addictive behaviors, but they can still navigate through life's challenges. They mention traveling from a hotel to an airport, implying a sense of transience, and express anticipation for a future where they will find healing on a seashore, free from any consequences or burdens.
In the concluding lines, the singer expresses gratitude to the person they are addressing for paying attention to them, despite their past mistakes. They mention their resistance to interventions, possibly suggesting a stubborn or independent nature. The mention of "challenging times" alludes to the difficulties they face. The verse ends with a repetition of the earlier line about slipping away, accompanied by aspirations for a brighter future marked by personal growth, symbolized by the end of the cold war. The phrase "ready and willing, to seize the day" conveys the singer's determination to move forward and embark on a new path.

Elizabeth is just in the zone these days and she's cranking out some of the freshest music around; I'm thrilled to listen (and watch the great videos) I fell in love with Elizabeth on Apron Strings years ago and I knew she would shine bright someday soon...can't wait to listen to the rest of the new album

It's funny, I hate 'Country' music but I can't get enough of Ms Cook's output. She must be talking across genres or something. Regardless, I love it!
