Elizabeth wrote her first song at age six, banging out melodies on an old upright in a Greenwhich Village laundry room. A born romantic, Elizabeth transformed the music of Debussy, molding it to the driving rhythms of the washer and dryer. With Debussy and Bach on her left and the Beatles just to her right, Elizabeth quickly developed a sound all her own. Her “Baroque” pop songs have frequently been compared to those of Rufus Wainright, Fiona Apple and Laura Nyro.
Back to You

That is all I ever really asked
And how it all went down
I'm all through putting all of that on you
And how I threw myself around
Trying to find the man I am outside of you
And how it goes is like this
All that I am and have these days can all be traced
Back to you
I wonder if my best
Would have ever been enough for you
And how it all went down
I'm all through putting all of that on me
And how I watched you thrash around
Trying to right the wrongs that don't belong to you
Once and for all it's like this
All that I am and have these days can all be traced
Back to you
In Elizabeth Ziman's song "Back to You," the lyrics express a sense of self-reflection and acknowledgement of past relationships. The opening lines, "I know now you gave your best, that is all I ever really asked," indicate that the singer has come to terms with the fact that their ex-partner did the best they could in the relationship. The singer then reflects on their own actions and attempts to find their own identity separate from their ex-partner, which suggests that perhaps they were overly dependent on the relationship for their self-worth. This is further emphasized in the line, "All that I am and have these days can all be traced back to you," indicating that even though the relationship has ended, the singer's life and identity have been shaped by it.
The chorus repeats the line, "All that I am and have these days can all be traced back to you," and emphasizes the idea that our experiences, both positive and negative, shape who we are as people. In the second verse, the singer wonders if they were ever enough for their ex-partner, but then realizes that placing all the blame on themselves is not productive. Instead, they empathize with their ex-partner's struggles and attempts to fix things. The final line of the song, "Once and for all it's like this," serves as a conclusion to the singer's reflection and acceptance of the past.
Overall, "Back to You" is a song about growth and acceptance, acknowledging the past as a part of who we are, and moving on from it with a newfound sense of self.
