The song "Melodia" by Elizio is an autobiographical piece about his journey and experiences as a Cape Verdean born in Cabo Verde. The lyrics are a mixture of Cape Verdean creole and Portuguese, and the song's rhythm mixes traditional Cape Verdean music with modern beats.
The opening line of the song "Obi kel storia verdad, verdad storia obi kel storia" can be translated to mean "Every story is true, true is every story." The repetition of "obi ben" in the following line is a Cape Verdean expression used to call out to someone to come closer. Elizio goes on to sing about his life in Cabo Verde and Luanda, Angola. He depicts the challenges of daily life in Luanda during a time of war, where gunfires and explosions were common, and ambulances and police vehicles were a regular sight.
The chorus of the song, "Melodia allegria, Melodia nostalgia" translates to "Melody of joy, melody of nostalgia," and symbolizes the duality of Elizio's emotions as he reflects on his journey. He sings about living in different houses, going to different schools, working here and there, living here and there, giving here and there, and not being able to stay still because he was never tired. Despite the struggles, Elizio finds joy in the music, which he considers to be his only ally.
Overall, the song is an homage to his mother, to Cape Verdean culture, and music. It's a celebration of his journey and a call to remember one's roots.
