Nights In White Satin
Elkie Brooks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send

Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore

'Cause I love you
Yes, I love you
Oh, how I love you

Gazing at people
Some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through
They can't understand

Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You'll be in the end,

And I love you
Yes, I love you
Oh, how I love you

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send

Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore

And I love you
Yes, I love you
Oh, how I love you

And I love you

Yes, I love you
Oh, how I love you

Overall Meaning

Elkie Brooks's song "Nights In White Satin" is a beautiful and melancholic piece that speaks about the boundless love that the singer holds for someone. The first two lines of the song set the tone and theme of the song- "Nights in white satin, never reaching the end." The nights here symbolize a sense of eternity, love that is boundless and never-ending. The following line "Letters I've written, never meaning to send" shows that the singer wishes to express their feelings but can't find the way or means to do it.

The second verse speaks about the singer's realization of the beauty of life and love- "Beauty I'd always missed, with these eyes before. Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore." The singer has come to see the world with different eyes, and they now can see the beauty of life and love that they had missed earlier. The refrains that follow - "Cause I love you, yes, I love you" emphasize the intense love the singer has for someone.

The final verse talks about how the singer's love is misunderstood or unaccepted by others - "Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend. Just what you want to be, you'll be in the end." The singer is aware of the criticism they face from others but remains determinedly in love with the person. The song ends with an emphasis on the phrase "And I love you" to show the depth and intensity of love the singer feels. In conclusion, "Nights In White Satin" is a beautiful, emotional love song with deep and complex lyrics that speak of the singer's unrequited love for someone.
